Almost nothing on...sure why not!

IMO don't get a triple unless you have 2 friends joining
IMO the Stevenson suite with a bathroom is a waste.
For the F2013-SP2014 year
There will be NO food service in Grant...so you have to walk to another dorm for food.
There MAY not be any food service in Lincoln (based on new info I posted this week)...so you MAY have to walk to another dorm for food.
Neptune and Stevenson (back in 99-02) were impossible to get into as a Freshman (you needed 24+ CR hours completed to be considered) but that may change with Gilbert opening up and the lower attendance.
I would not be comfortable sharing a small living space and TV with 11 other strangers. (small for 12 people that is)
IMO for the money and Freshman experience Douglas is the best option for this upcoming year. There are about 48 people per floor. This is good for meeting people but bad for bathroom space. One other good thing is that its just across the street from the REC and the East side of Huskie Stadium. They will also have wifi up by then. Douglas also has 3 different dining options...all you can eat, dog pound deli and A la Carte for breakfast and lunch. There were also a few gen ed classes held within Douglas (10 years back) so if that still is the practice you can schedule one of those it makes cold days like this a tad easier to get to class.
Wow. That is great info and thanks for the link. The new dorms are about $1700 more a year than Douglas, but only $500 more than Stevenson. Great to know about cafeterias for Grant and Lincoln. Now I can tell my wife that browsing this site isn't a waste of time!

I would not recommend Stevenson as a good dorm for new freshman in terms of meeting new people. Most of the doors are closed and the upperclassmen are not looking to make friends with freshman so easily.
Are they even giving your kid the option of Stevenson?
Also I do not recommend trying to save a buck by trying for a Douglas triple unless your kid has 2 friends who also want to room with her.
One down side with Douglas and Lincoln that I forgot about is that they have bunk beds. All the other dorms do not. Also no elevator, so if you live on the 5th floor (3.5 floors up) that could be annoying.

They STILL have bunk beds? It's been like that since the beginning of time. That's how Douglas was when I was there. I had a single, so it really did not matter for me.

Yes, same arrangement, but the desks look much more modern. I believe they were some sort of Formica when I was there. I can still picture my fridge and B/W TV on one of the desks.
No stains left over from me. I was quite fastitdious then.

As I recall, it was 4.5 flights up. Kept your legs strong.

I remember that from living on 5th floor in Lincoln Hall. Moving in and out sucked.

Thanks for the information HJ, you have been very helpful. For next year, there aren't a lot of great options for freshmen. But 2014 should be better.

New dorms are awesome. That's all we had time to tour. It was a bad day because of the cold and wind. My son wasn't too excited about anything except the clusters, lobby, and eating area of the new dorms. And he thought the basketball team was much better than he anticipated.

I really believe the new dorms will sell well with the parents and students. You are right, they are awesome. If your son is interested, I would make a room deposit ASAP.

Chicago Man Freed after Reports of Having a Gun near ISU
http://centralillinoisproud.com/fulltext?nxd_id=305962
ISU experienced a lockdown because a Chicago man who came to visit his ex GF was falsely accused by her of having a gun.
This scary news is not limited to NIU due to proximity to Chicago.

If it was NIU, it would be all over the news.
After all a High school and prep school also went on lockdown.

One thing we have to remember is that IL St is not in the Chicago TV market...NIU is.
However, there are case where stuff happens involving NU or UIC students around campus (but not actually "on" campus) which gets passed over by the media easily.

Is the local news on it?
Peoria/Bloomington ABC/CBS/NBC?

NU and UIC have violence on or near campus weekly, I feel like the media writes it of as "Chicago" violence as opposed to reporting it as school related.
