Er---

Kirk led the team to being a top tier national contender for many years...

Showing the way.

Every team in the country is a bubble team if they lose a lot more games at this point. Us included. Only difference is among stronger teams we have less margin for error.

We are NOT in the same boat as those three schools. Those three schools STILL have a chance to get some quality wins. WE do NOT. No other school in the country is in our boat. NONE.

Yes- those other schools have more quality win chances to offset any losses they may get.

As I just posted, that means, we have less margin for error should our kids lose.

Different wording, but same sentiment.

I'd say Memphis has a better chance to make the tournament than any of those teams. Sure, they could beat a ranked team or two in their conference, but they'll almost certainly lose a few more that they shouldn't. They'll all have to make noise in the conference tournament to get in. And that's harder to do in the SEC/ACC than in the CUSA tournament.

3 straight 2nd round losses. Bill Self 2 straight 1st round losses. Then a tourney run by both.

That's fine too. But every year they go into the season thinking they can win a national title. On here, it seems making it out of the first round is a good year.

Why not aim higher is the question? That's all.

You totally lost me. Who thinks making it out of the first round is a good year? Are you talking about the fans, the team or both?

Reading through these threads, it seems some fans think winning one game is a very successful season. With this team, heavy on juniors/three year starters/Adonis/McD all american - we should be talking about Final Four potential.

We very well may not even make the tournament.

Hyperbole.

Reading through these threads, it seems some fans think losing three games is a failed season. With this program's long-term history and a realistic view of where we are as a program, we should be hoping to advance past our first game in the NCAA tournament. That would be progress.

We very well may not even make the tournament if everything falls apart and we start losing games... which we haven't done in quite a few weeks.

Hell a loss to Southern Miss at this point won't kill us and they look to have the only realistic chance of beating us.

I think that's part of the problem. Instead of thinking national title every year, being in the sweet 16 a few times a decade is acceptable.

Let's aim to be the best. Not just in baskeball, but every sport.

There is a difference between realistic expectations and pie in the sky craziness. Not even Duke, UNC, UCLA, Kentucky, Indiana or Kansas fans realistically expect to win a national title every year. If they do, they are loons. I am all for the Memphis program shooting for the stars, I personally am not expecting the program to make the final four every year. Do that if you want to, but you are going to be disappointed because no one dominates college basketball to that degree.

Not saying they expect to every year. But that's what they expect of the program. I don't think our program expectations are the same. We are fine with a sweet 16 every now and then and an occassional run every decade.

Think Kentucky would be fine with that? Of course not.

Why don't we have Kentucky's mindset is my question?

Maybe because UK has 8 national titles and 15 final fours. Past success has a direct affect on future expectations for a college sports program.

We have had the Kentucky mindset, we've just not obtained the same results.

We're one of the few programs that has been penalized as much as the Wildcats have. That's the "just win" or "win at all costs" mindset.

I'd prefer that particular mindset not continue.

Cal said before season they weren't gonna be very good. Maryland and UNC have to win some games in the ACC.

Good stuff. My goal for the team is to make at least a sweet 16. After that you need some breaks. Like a last second shot, the other team to blow a layup or something of the sort.
