I'm going to make a prediction. The excuse here will be "Those are rich private-school kids. They don't have to work!"
When I was in school back in the early 90s I waited tables. I used to hand the manager the basketball schedule and tell him that if I was scheduled for any of the game days I would not be showing up. He would laugh, but he also never scheduled me for game days.
I was part of the student sections that Bob Huggins called the most obnoxious student section in college sports. The opposing teams would have to bring chairs out to the FT line during timeouts since we would make so much noise. I really enjoyed being at those games. It is one of my favorite college memories.
Wish the current students could experience just a little bit of that environment.

Its actually the same concept.
If you can figure out a better reason behind why more students don't take advantage of free transportation let me know.

Classic.
When I was a student, I went to every game. This was during the Finch, Price, Jones, and Cal teams......aka 1996-2000. We sucked and I worked, but I had fun.

A better reason than they don't want to be seen as poor or want people to think they do things black people do? Hmmm, that's a tough one. Could be that...Oh, I don't know...they just don't feel like going to the game?
Seriously, the blinders you are wearing are straight out of the 20th century. Please go back.

They are training for the day when they can buy nice seats, show up fashionably late and years later get aggravated when someone stands up and makes noise in front of them. How do you think our old fans got the way they are?

On-campus high speed rail to downtown or on-campus arena. NOW
That would be awesome. Sometimes I drive home after work and change clothes, drive about four miles to a train station and take the train to the front of the AAC for a Mavericks game or concert. Nice change of pace and don't have to fight the traffic or park.

Or you continue to disagree with me for no reason and call it illogical. Perhaps if you had an attention span longer than a goldfish, you could find the root of the actual conversation next time?

There are many schools with off-campus bb arenas and students who fill them. There are also schools with off-campus football stadiums, like Oregon, whose students show up in droves.
Been talking BB and you use a FB example. And the example is the state land-grant university of the state of Oregon, where the university is the city's largest employer in a town of approx 150K. In fact, the UO campus covers half the city. Major sports at Oregon are the "thing to do" in a town the size of Eugene. Sports programs at UO are the focus of the entire state, certainly the city of Eugene & the student body. In Memphis, our athletics are probably only marginally supported over OM & UTK & the city as a whole has much more diverse interests than Memphis BB - including the Grizzlies, and many non-sports interests.
Did anyone watch the UK vs AL game last night? Did you notice the on-campus student support & where the students were sitting? Even AL, where they don't even no how to spell BB, the on-campus students support the BB program. And for the comment about students at the bars, maybe that's why they are still students. When I was going to college, I was almost finished before I turned 21.
But I do agree that if the students aren't attending, and they aren't for whatever reason, then make the student section smaller & sell the seats to paying customers.
Still believe the answer to student & alumni involvement & support ($$) for our athletic programs is OC facilities. And there are multiple examples & studies that show that OC facilities increase student & alumni involvement.
Yes, I used a football example, but you can certainly compare that to our lack of students at the LB, too. I also said there are other schools with bb arenas off-campus and their students somehow show up. So, I don't think you HAVE to have an on-campus arena to have good support for your bb program.
The OSU Beavers and the Portland Blazers also have huge followings in Oregon; it's not all about U of O sports. And conversely, I think when our bb is winning, even the SEC fans become Tiger BB fans, as did just about every person in Memphis during our NC run.
And for the record, I have been singing the virtues of an OCU for years. I see LOTS of value in having both bb and football on campus.
I finished my degree at 20. I never had enough money to eat in a restaurant, much less go to a bar. Today, it's the average to take 5-6 years to graduate. Trust me, today's kids, by and large, have lots of money to drink and eat. Going to a game should not be much of a hardship.

Laziness?
But I sure as heck know it doesn't seem to faze the "rich" Rhodes students who get shuttled to E&H for frat parties.

RE: The student section
when we played at the old round house and Kirk was coach, the student section was wild. we'd stay on the opposing players and coaches 30 minutes before a game started until the final buzzer.
never had so much fun and talking so much smack to the visitor's. usually there was a little alcohol involved somewhere along the way.
kids today have no idea how good they have it.

Same when I was a student in the 70s, full house, we stayed on the opposition. Remember Al McGuire after a big game with Marquette (that we lost) telling the whole arena we were "number 1". Some great games and I didn't miss a one. And yes I would have driven downtown to see the games. But today, things are different. Lots of things for kids to do and the world revolves around them (or haven't you noticed), so unless it's about them it won't play like it did back in the day. No need for today's students who might disagree to state otherwise, the proof is in the support or lack of it. But have to say the student seating leaves something to be desired & the logistics to get there too. Nonetheless, if even AL draws a gym full of students for BB games, it has to be the thing to do ON CAMPUS.

When I was a student, I rarely went to weeknight games, even though I lived near campus, because I usually had to study (average mind / tough major). Considering how many students now live out east and that games are downtown, their low attendance on weeknights isn't too surprising. I wish UofM would build more dormitories and commit to bringing more students onto campus the way Louisville has. It has benefited them in several ways.
