Sad story...could happen anywhere

Unfortunate situation at NIU. Honestly, it could happen at any University and I'm shocked/thankful it doesn't happen more often.

Almost happened to me on my 21st. Surprised I made it, wasn't a big drinker and got myself into a mess at Wayside East.

RE: Sad story...could happen anywhere
When I was a freshman I got involved with rushing and eventually pledging a fraternity. It turned out to be the worst decision I've ever made in my life but I learn a lot about myself through the whole process. There were multiple times where I probably should have been dead. It turned me into an alcoholic and I did VERY VERY VERY bad in school that semester.

There was one ceremony in which we had to "drink deep" into a bottle while blind folded - we all got different bottles of ****. Mine turned out to be 151. Usually the "ceremonies" were pretty mentally and physically challenging but this one was different. After I took the huge swig of my 151 they took our blindfolds off and told us we were going to the strip club. Needless to say, I was ecstatic, and ended up drinking the entire pint of 151 in about a half hour as everyone encouraged everyone else to get hammered.

I blacked out completely - I guess I got into my friends car and was on the way to the strip joint when I puked everywhere. They brought me back and just left me at the frat house. I honestly probably should have been taken to the hospital. I'm happy I woke up the next morning. This story doesn't necessarily talk about the hazing that went on as it was mostly my own fault for drinking but.. what ever there were multiple other times where the hazing got out of control. I talked to people in other frats who said that the stuff they were making us do was ridiculous.

I know some people have had great experiences with greek life and I respect that. My experience was much worse and I ended up quitting 24 hours before being initiated after a semester of doing a bunch of ****. Turns out the frat got kicked off campus last year for something VERY similar to the NIU situation. Glad I wasn't a part of it.
