Assistant Coaching Candidates
We've heard a lot about who is leaving, but very little about who is coming. For the first time, I actually heard a name to possibly join the staff and that's Cory Hanson. He was obviously a LB here and he was a GA for the last few years before this season. I would imagine he would be a LB coach, but I hope that's not the case because it means Kane is leaving.
Here is what NIU needs to replace:
OL coach
WR coach
RB coach
DL coach
DB coach
We also need a recruiting coordinator, and if Kane goes we pretty much have lost all of our ties to Florida. If he stays, I would make him recruiting coordinator. If I had to bet, I would imagine he's going to leave. I would take a serious look at bringing Cubit in as OC/QB coach and moving Cole back to WR coach. Cubit recruited Florida heavily at WMU. Melvin Rice played here and was a GA here and is working a QC for Kill in Minnesota now. I would bring him in as the DB coach to replace McNutt. Bart Miller (the Wisconsin GA turned OL coach) would be a great candidate for OL coach, but I get the feeling he's going to get a BCS job somewhere. You have to consider Hammock as a possible OC option as well.
Who else has ideas?

Too early for him to be an Asst. Coach, but I've heard that Willie Clark will be joining the Huskie staff as a GA.

With the coaching changes at Purdue and Wisky, I think they could grab someone from one of the old staffs with good Midwest ties.

That's a damn good idea. Wonder if he'd be interested?

He withdrew his name from the WIU head coaching gig, so either he's going to be a coordinator somewhere or he's going to sit out a year. Could probably help us with some of the guys WMU were going after too. Plus, the WMU game next year would just be full of storylines lol.

RE: Assistant Coaching Candidates
A good old fashioned rosterbation (coaching staff edition) thread. Nice.
For FL tied guys there's cherry picking Mario Cristobal's old FIU staff:
Cedric Calhoun, DL
Jeff Popovich, DBs/ST
Lazy but plausible, hey he played here pick:
Melvin Rice, DBs
Beyond that, if there's anyone worth grabbing off NDSU, ISU, or someone Hazell doesn't take with him from Kent, I'd be interested.

RE: Assistant Coaching Candidates
Quote:Cedric Calhoun enters his third year as FIU's defensive line coach in 2012. His first two years in Miami have been astonishing as the unit has recorded 33 and 35 sacks, respectively, in 2010 and 2011. The 35 sacks recorded last season was good for No. 15 nationally and No. 1 in the Sun Belt Conference. The 2011 line also helped the defense finish 22nd in the nation in rush defense and 31st averaging 6.77 tackles per loss game.
Oh I like this guy.

Greg Burns wouldn't be bad from Purdue. Has good experience as DB coach, recruits FL for Purdue and the pay was already bad at Purdue. Not sure if he is leaving though. Here is an article from when they hired him last year. http://espn.go.com/blog/bigten/post/_/id...dary-coach

While I am a cubit supporter and fan, I don't think he would fit niu's style.
Running the ball is kind of an afterthought.
You could probably pick up his son Ryan, who has been our qb coach a co-oc in 2012 though. I don't think either will have a problem finding a job.

Cubit is a smart guy, I don't think he would struggle to adjust to NIU's style.

I don't necessarily disagree...but you have to remember that he isn't the easiest person to work with and he greatly prefers throwing the ball.

Our recruit, Robert Jones, said they both were. There hasn't been a statement from either school, though.

RE: Assistant Coaching Candidates
I bet Joe Tripodi gets a look at OL. Although he's young he has a great background as a player and coach. And we have a completely veteran OL coming back unlike this year so you could get away with a younger coach there.
Carey really needs to get someone on the staff with recruiting ties to Florida though.
