Mike Sabock Coaching in the Orange Bowl
Signed a month contract today. Not sure what exactly he'll be doing, but he'll be here.

Get out! Briefly talked to him and he never said anything. Awesome for Sabock.

Wouldn't be surprised if it led to a full time position coach.

I wouldn't bet on it. Sounds like it's only for the bowl.

I would be, he just retired and is enjoying Florida. I doubt he would move back to DeKalb. Very cool to see him back.

Maybe it'll just be a yearly "Coach NIU in New Years Day Bowl Game in Warm Climate" relationship

As an aside, Mike Sabock was the only coach in all of NIU Athletics who terrified me when I was at NIU. I was more comfortable being called into a meeting with Cary Groth and Dee Abrahamson than I was seeing Mike Sabock from a distance at Huskie Stadium.

Get Joe Novak a contract too. We aren't in the Orange Bowl if it isn't for him, he was the one that laid the groundwork for where this program is today. I don't think any of the players on the team ever played for him, but I'm surea they all know who he is.

Gotta keep in mind NIU has been pretty much coaching a man short all year because they didn't really replace Dunbar, just gave Carey another duty. Now you take away Doeren, and they probably felt like they needed to add a coach for the bowl game.

I really don't know. My guess is he's going to be helping Carey with a few different things on offense, though.

Coach Sabock coached Defense and Special Teams while I was there. Not saying he could not coach the OL but I doubt he will be OL coach. Get the DB's and OLB ready for FSU! Glad to see he is back, all the time in coaching and at NIU its great to see him in the Orange Bowl.

That'll be a nice relationship. He helps NIU out when they're down a couple of coaches, and he gets to pull the cardinal and black shirt over his head one more time in a New Year's Day bowl game.

A fitting thank you to a guy who was a class act here for years.

Was he on staff when we played Miami in the original Orange Bowl in the mid-eighties?

if he was so good and one thinks head coaching, why was he an asst at NIU for like 23 yrs. He was an OK coach who claim to fame is 23 as an asst at one place.

Maybe they can keep him on PT to recruit Florida for us.

He was also a great recruiter. Ask around Illinois, the man was solid. Not sure he ever wanted to be a head coach. I respect Mike and glad he is back, I know he will help the Huskies.

RE: Mike Sabock Coaching in the Orange Bowl
I'm not 100% sure on this one, but I've heard Nielsen (obviously), Kane, Jackson, and McNutt are going to N.C. State after the Orange Bowl. If that's all we lose, I think you have to be very happy with that. To lose your head coach and keep both coordinators would be huge, IMO. Pretty much the entire offensive staff would be intact too. You could bring Canada back and move Cole back to WR coach. Losing most of the defensive staff hurts, but keeping the Niemann would be just huge.

That's the four I'd think would probably go. Not bad if that's how it works out.

Going to have to fill the FL recruiting turf with one of the new hires I'd think.
