Exclamation Returning Starters for Next Year
For the time being, I'm assuming no transfers out. Only seniors are listed as non-returning. I'm focusing on those who have had significant playing time.

QB: Both Brown and Perry return, as well as four others who haven't seen any playing time. Bento is leaving.

RB: Reaves, Franklin and Coles all return. Dontavius is leaving.

WR: Jackie, Jay, JJ and DJ return. Adams and Hearn will be missed.

TE: Backman returns. Accursio is gone.

OL: I could use some help here. Hubbard and Payne are gone. I know we played a lot of different linemen here. If healthy, this unit could be much improved next year. I think we return four of our main starters.

DL: No seniors. I think a lot of these guys took their beatings this year and will be ready to return the favor next year.

LB: Marvin Burdette will be missed. Irvin too. I don't know if White or Jones will be back next year. Either or both of them returning would help a lot since this will be our most inexperienced unit.

DB: Another place where we played a lot of freshmen. Hopefully they are ready to grow up. Richards and Nolen are gone.

ST: Ty Long (and his grandfather) will be back. Hunter the Punter will be back. Long Snapper Taylor Klein is gone.

The offense should be really good again. We scored more points this year than in any of the Callaway years, even when Joe Webb was running over everyone. The second year in the system should be even better. The are holes to fill are WR and OL, but they aren't glaring problems.

The defense needs to improve. The defense gave up more points this year than in any of the Callaway years. More than under Schumann, more than under West. Only the linebacking corps is hit hard with departures. I keep hoping the trial by fire will pay dividends in the future.

Having both kicking specialists coming back is always a plus. Especially when they are as good as ours.

Please critique and provide corrections if I've missed something. I know some of you follow this a lot closer than I do, but I wanted to get my thoughts down on paper.

OL Autry, Hix, & O'Leary are returning I believe. All played Center and other line positions.

Thanks for the additions, but don't we need more LB depth than TE depth? Is he more suited to play TE?

Nolen Smith should be back at WR. Line him up in the slot and force a linebacker to cover him and he could be hell on wheels.

I really liked the way Backman played TE at UCF. He is very good.

Who steps up as our tacklers ? We are losing our top 2 guys. And we obviously didn't have enough depth at LB this year.

Thanks for the additions, but don't we need more LB depth than TE depth? Is he more suited to play TE?

He switched over at about mid-season. Gave us a big blocking package with Sam and Backman playing TE and Jones at blocking FB. HCGM credits this as part of reason for rushing turnaround.

RE: Returning Starters for Next Year
I agree with Smaug about moving Nolen Smith back to receiver to offset the loss of depth there. I think Slaughter will transition well to one of our top linebackers. On the OL I've heard one of the freshman that didn't play this year, Unique Crumbley (sp?), will be a good one.

I was surprised he did not play this year. He lost a good bit of weight and looked more mobile.

You could say that he is one of a kind.

I think that I heard back when fall practice started that he wasnt going to be eligible this year ( if so, I assume it would have been due to marginal performance in the classroom ).

Connor Boyett will be a senior on the DL. Finished 2nd in sacks, 1st in forced fumbles/fumbles recovered, 3rd in tackles for loss.

Why he didn't play more the last few games, idk?

I also think Chris Walton will be a senior.

Until shown otherwise, I am offically worried about our team's lack of tackling ability with the departure of Irvin & Burdette.

Yep, he was academically ineligible. Didn't pass enough classes. Hopefully he turned it around and will be back.
