Good for when the Hokies come!

We can call the visitor section the PIG PEN

Well there goes any ties to Smithfield as they will no longer have corporate headquarters here in Hampton Roads. That's the 2nd Fortune 500 company our area has lost in a year. Not good. Now we only have 3 Fortune 500 companies.

Smithfield's HQ will still be in Smithfield, VA. Seriously, where do you come up with their HQ being moved? They couldn't have made it more clear that they will continue on as they have and their will be no relocation.

I agree that the operations at Smithfield including it's corporate structure will still be in Smithfield, but I thought it was very clear - Chinese firm will BUY Smithfield foods, which means the main parent company and owner will be in China. The Chinese firm will most likely have the final say so in any advertising or naming rights with any sports teams. The link below also states that Smithfield foods will cease to be a public company on the stock exchange and will be part of a private company with HQ in China.

I'd say our richest alum would definitely be J. Douglas Perry, one of the founders of Dollar Tree Inc. The library is named after him and his wife.

When it comes to possible large sponsorship opportunitues they do not necessarily have to be corporations headed by alumni. Other local fortune 500's that come to mind are Smithfield Foods, and Norfolk Southern. Perhaps a Thoroughbred Stadium, or the Smithfield Bacon Bowl could be in our future.

How bout "The Slaughter House"

I can see the PETA protests now.

From what I hear, PETA is more of a slaughterhouse than Smithfield.

I didn't get that impression. What I read is that they don't want to spend top dollar for short-term fixes that will be replaced in quick order. That sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

RE: ODU Master Plan
My impression is that the renovated stadium won't be finished by the time we start C-USA football, but we need to make certain improvements in order to meet conference standards, so we will have to comply with regulations before the stadium is rebuilt/renovated. These improvements will therefore be short term and we won't spend too much money for these fixes because we'll rip them out and put something more permanent when the stadium is finished.

Can you source this? I saw someone else allude to this, but I have neither seen nor heard of any mandated "standards" by CUSA.

BTW, while the average CUSA stadium size in 2011 was twice the capacity of Foreman, Conference USA schools drew an average 26,500 per home game in 2011.

The link that Sirloin posted http://hamptonroads.com/2013/06/report-o...few-months led to AimHigh saying that they were looking for a cheap fix (the last paragraph or two), I was saying that I thought it referred to temporary fixes, not that the renovation would be a cheap fix.

Oh, ok

ODU must provide an instant-replay booth in the press box.

That makes sense. Tnx!

Yeah, remember. We've had to provide tents to FCS teams since all of them couldn't fit in the opposing locker room. Now add 20 scholarships and guess what would happen. I've also heard that our press box is woefully out of date.

RE: ODU Master Plan
Our press box is the worst. And the vistor locker room with tents. We may have a great team but we need to change these things. The guys couldn't even fit thru the door with pads on without standing sideways. And the showers were little more then a hose. But the media room over by our locker room under 102 is just as bad.

Foreman is fun for what it is. But if we are going to play with the big boys we got to have a place like the big boys. I think you leave the character but update more.

43rd street field would be perfect for the new stadium. I saw looking out the window daydreaming of a stadium soldout overlooking the river and golf course. Hmmmm one can only hope.

I have wondered all along if the press box wouldn't have to eventually comply with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) proscriptions.
That probably means an elevator....

And if so, adding stuff like that will totally destroy the asthetics of the existing clamshells. We need to just tear the thing down and start over. The bricks can be salvaged and repurposed if any of the historical feel is required to be retained.

I like the repurpose idea with new facility. Clamshell outer wall area reusing the existing bricks in the same design.
