RE: Did the A-Sun replace Belmont with a better Belmont?
NKU is continuing its roll in their D-I volleyball debut. They just beat Alabama A&M 3-0 and host Morehead State 3-1 at Morehead's Tournament. They are now 6-0 overall.
A-Sun standings:
Northern Kentucky 6-0
ETSU 5-1
Kennesaw State 4-1
FGCU 2-2
USC Upstate 2-2
North Florida 1-3
Lipscomb 1-4
Stetson 1-5
Mercer 0-1
Jacksonville 0-5
What's up with Lipscomb? Losing Katie Rose to graduation must have taken its toll! LU's only win so far has come vs. Appalachian State.
Katie Rose:
Did the A-Sun replace Belmont with a better Belmont? In volleyball, uh, yes. BU just lost to Texas-San Antonio 0-3 and UTEP 0-3. They are now 1-4 overall and sitting 4th of 6 in the OVC-East.

I wouldn't say that just yet. The quality of competition has been vastly different for NKU and Belmont. Most of the teams Belmont has played were in the top 100 RPI last year. Alabama A&M being the one exception. They've played some good teams and lost. NKU on the other hand has played St Peters, NC A&T, Wright St, Western Carolina, and Morehead St. St Peters is one of the bottom five DI programs in the country. They just hired a coach last week, a high school coach. Wright St and A&T are both winless on the season. Now, the Morehead win is a very good one though and is really impressive. Morehead always is at the top of the OVC. They spend on a much higher level for volleyball than anyone else in the conference. Almost double most programs (before Belmont. Belmont is closer in range to them).
NKU is definitely off to a strong start, but I wouldn't necessarily say they're better than Belmont at this point.

And, NKU will be gone as soon as they finish the DI transition. Let's just hope that ETSU beats them out of here.

With all that said, Northern Kentucky beat Evansville today. They're at the bottom of the Valley, but the Valley is a top 10 volleyball conference in the nation. Impressive. For what it's worth, ETSU beat Charlotte today and thumped Chatt last night. They're looking really good to start the season this year.

I don't know . . . to me, NKU is looking a lot stronger to me than Belmont. They keep winning as a D-1 school when they were D-II just last season.
NKU Volleyball:
Belmont, on the other hand, was beat 3-1 today by Texas-San Antonio. That's not leaving their fans much to cheer about.
BU Volleyball fans (kind of a motley bunch, aren't they):
And for our friends the LU Bisons? They, too, are keeping on the losing track dropping 3-1 against Houston on their own dimly lit court in their own Lipscomb Invitational tournament. Keep it up Bisons!!!
Lipscomb Volleyball:
A-Sun standings:
Northern Kentucky 7-0
ETSU 6-2

FGCU 4-3
Kennesaw State 4-3
USC Upstate 2-4
Lipscomb 1-4

I'll make the comment. NKU is pack of tall cuties with strong arms, broad shoulders, and 30-inch verticals. I'd even bet most of them can easily dunk a basketball. However, our team is hotter!
NKU @ ETSU: Friday October 5, 7:00PM.
There's also 3 other chances to support our Bucs at home before then:
vs. Marshall: Monday September 3, 7:00PM
vs. Western Carolina: Tuesday September 11, 7:00PM
vs. USC Upstate: Friday September 21, 7:00PM

GO BUCS!!!

Norse win again, Bucs win again...
A-Sun standings:
Northern Kentucky 7-0
ETSU 7-2
Mercer 2-1
FGCU 4-3
Kennesaw State 4-3
USC Upstate 2-4
North Florida 1-4
Lipscomb 1-5
Stetson 1-7
Jacksonville 0-6
Belmont, who NKU has so far proven to be the better, is 1-5. With the exception of 3-0 UNC-G, NKU is doing something that all of the other teams in the A-Sun, OVC, and SoCon are not . . . they're not losing (I probably just jinxed them).

RE: Did the A-Sun replace Belmont with a better Belmont?
It's clear who's shaping-up into the leagues two best teams:
Copied from A-Sun site:
• The A-Sun is now 28-34 (.452) through the first two weeks of regular season play. A-Sun teams have posted wins over teams from 12 Divison I conferences and hold a .500 or better winning percentage against the Atlantic 10, Big South, Horizon, MAC, MAAC, MEAC, MVC, OVC, Sun Belt, and SWAC conferences.
• New kid on the block Northern Kentucky is the first A-Sun team since 2005 to open the regular season with seven or more wins without a loss. Florida Atlantic was the last to do so in 2005, going 15-0 en route to a 29-3 overall record and a 9-0 mark in the conference. FAU won its third A-Sun championship that year and lost 3-0 to the Florida Gators in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
• NKU leads the A-Sun in Hitting Percentage (.248), Assists (13.40/set), Kills (14.68/set) and Service Aces (2.04/set). They are also second in the A-Sun in Opponent Hitting Pct. (.127). Jenna Ruble is the A-Sun individual leader with a .378 hitting pct., while Jenna Schreiver also leads the A-Sun in assists with 11.84 per set. Schreiver recorded her 4,000th career assist last weekend against Alabama A&M and now has 4,021 for her career.
• ETSU is enjoying its best A-Sun regular season start since 2006-07, when the Bucs went 6-3 through their first nine games and finished 25-7 (8-0 A-Sun). Week one Player of the Week and Preseason Player of the Year Megan Devine leads the A-Sun in Kills with 145, averaging 4.26 per set. The Bucs also lead the A-Sun in Blocks (2.79/set) and are second in Hitting Pct. (.244) and Kills (12.82/set).

It's obviously mostly about basketball in the ASun. Will NKU dominated the ASun in men's basketball? Who knows. Looks like they have the right things in place though. There are two sports in the ASun, basketball ( men and women) and baseball. All the other stuff is just to meet NCAA regulations and is mostly irrelevant and invisible.

And the goofy league does not even sponsor collegiate football. They actually try to pass off soccer as football. Get us out of here!

Eh, I don't think that is anywhere close to clear at this point. NKU has played two decent teams so far - Morehead and Evansville. They did win those, but they have played quite a few teams that I would predict will finish in the 300's in the RPI this year (St Peters, Wright St, NC A&T, and Alabama A&M). ETSU has played a much better schedule and they are legit this year. The pieces are there, plus the experience. NKU is more likely 4th or worse in the conference. Lipscomb is always the top until someone knocks them off after their dominance in the league the past 4 or 5 years. They are 2-5 right now, but four of those five losses are to teams that were in the NCAA tournament last year and the other is to Houston, a top 100 RPI program. Also, I would consider FGCU to be ahead of NKU as well. A very good coach, with a strong history who has done well in this league since they entered. Too many question marks at this point in the season to determine who clearly the top two teams are.

Way to go with the great stats, L-G-B! I still think it'll be a #1 vs. #2 matchup come October 5th when NKU comes here. October 6th is Lipscomb. There's no benefit with losing, and I'm hoping it effects the grammatically incorrect Bisons accordingly.

Volleyball:
Norse win again, remain unbeaten! They swept Providence 3-0. Belmont lost again! They were swept by Ohio University 3-0. We lost to Austin Peay 3-0 and Lipscomb beat Iona 3-0.
A-Sun Standings
Northern Kentucky 8-0
ETSU 8-3
FGCU 4-3
Kennesaw State 6-3
Mercer 2-2
USC Upstate 2-4
North Florida 2-4
Lipscomb 2-6
Stetson 3-8
Jacksonville 0-7
(Why is K-State not ahead of FGCU?)
Also: Belmont 1-7
The Norse, IMO, are still proving themselves to be better than the BU they replaced. They open up conference play against Lipscomb on 9/18. I really don't much care for the Lip-Scum Bisons (they're just like Belmont, only on the other end of the boulevard), so Go Norse in that game. I wonder what Coach L.D. is thinking about playing NKU and LU back-to-back October 5th & 6th? That would be a great weekend for ETSU to sweep!!!
