Most of the guys I want are pretty similar in style in that they're 6-5 or 6-6, and can play inside and out (with the exception of Schakel who's a shooter). I think long and versatile guys probably fit Rhoades' style best, which is why almost every offer now is to a 6-4+ guard. Plus, wings are probably the biggest need right now, considering we just brought in three big men and the stable of guards we already have.

I'd argue that a true center is the #1 priority right now (now that we have a couple power forwards coming in this year).

Agreed. Would be great to have another guy in the 6'9" to 6'11" range after Drone departs (with only Meyer fitting that range currently). If we can have two "center" types on the roster each year, I feel like that'll give us additional versatility with our lineup, especially from a rebounding perspective.

I wouldn't expect to get one. The biggest guy we've offered in 2017 is a 6-8 small forward (apart from our offer to a seven footer who's ranked as the #4 recruit in the country).

From what I've seen from Meyer and Douglas, they both seem like more traditional bigs who don't stray far from the basket. Austin already has college ready size (6-10, 240), and Douglas has the length, shot blocking, and rebounding ability to play center. Plus, I'm still expecting Drone to have a big impact next year. There isn't a big man in the conference that's has the body to match his, so it all comes down to whether he can find more consistency with his finishing.

Fair enough, but I worry about our 6'8" guys being big enough to actually play down low and position for revounds. They'll need to put on some pounds over the next year. 6'8" and 200 lbs isn't going to cut it when teams like MTSU trot out four guys that are that height and weigh 20 to 35 pounds more.

Yeah definitely. Tim and Corey are going to need to hit the weight room.

RE: Rhoades Recruiting
New offer for 2017 guard out of Michigan, Gregory Elliot. 6'3'' SG with good length. Probably going to grow it sounds like.

Here is a write up from last year https://michiganpreps.n.rivals.com/news/...to-impress

And how is offer list is growing from this Wednesday http://www.scout.com/college/basketball/...ing-offers

Greg Elliott 6-3 Jr The Family (Detroit East English Village): He’s distinguished himself as the Family’s most consistent guard. He plays smart, alert ball on both ends of the court. Wingspan and instincts gets Elliott rebounds and deflections. Feeds the post and can thread it over 20 feet in the halfcourt. Then he’s talented enough to go get his shot off himself when needed. Elliott’s unselfish play led a near huge second-half comeback which ultimately came up a point short against the Las Vegas Prospects. Came out of the weekend with an offer from Rice.

RE: Rhoades Recruiting
Final 2016 rankings were just published by 247. Josh Hall is up from 140 to 104 (imagine what he could've done at Rice). The best CUSA recruit is Quentin Jackson (Charlotte) at 133. Ako Adams dropped out of the top 247 (he's at 260, Austin Meyer is at 333), not surprising considering he battled injuries for a lot of the season. Tim Harrison comes in at 171, our only representative. On the bright side, some of the schools who have commitments ranked below Tim: Pittsburgh, Northwestern, Tennessee, Florida State, West Virginia, Miami, Maryland, Indiana, USC, etc. As far as team rankings go, Rice is still well ahead of everybody else, although 247 isn't one of the sites that notes a lot of the lower recruits (Martin and Douglas aren't included, a ton of other conference recruits aren't included). According to 247, with just Tim, Ako, and Austin, we're the 71st ranked class in the country. Schools we're ahead of include Kansas State, West Virginia, Rhode Island, Wisconsin, Boston College.

I don't know anything about what happened, but whatever it was I'm sure it was the right choice. Still, it's nice to dream about a top 105 recruit.

RE: Rhoades Recruiting
Newest offer is 3* 2018 SF Warren Washington. 6-10, 195, so I'd assume the same body type as Quez and Tim. He plays for the same AAU team as Tim, and so when he posted that he had an offer from Rice, Tim responded by writing #RiceRising. Should be some benefit in recruiting a guy who already has a good relationship with somebody on the team. Offers from San Diego State, Nevada, and Tulane. After watching some video, he's incredibly skinny. Looks like he can play around the basket some, but can also face up and shoot. Has decent handles and driving ability for somebody his size and body type. He's still got two years left in HS though, so there's a lot of potential for growth both physically and basketball wise.

I have a feeling this is the type of big man we will be offering going forward. Someone who can shoot a little bit and has the height to play defense and rebound in the paint. I don't really see the need for a prototypical center.

2016-17 roster:
SR: Drone
JR: Jackson (RS), Koulechov (RS), Mency
SO: Evans, Letcher-Ellis, Cashaw
FR: Lott (RS), Harrison, Adams, Martin, Meyer, Douglas

Verbal commits seems to be pretty up to date and they show Jackson as a senior with Drone instead of a Jr (RS). Already have Lott correct as a Fr (RS). I wonder if Marcus Jackson has planned on graduating and we will actually have 2 spots? Or it could just be oversight.

I'm not sure he's been granted the redshirt year yet. Obviously, it will come at some point, but I guess he's a senior until the NCAA actually rules that he has the extra year.

Verbal Commits is pretty good, but I have noticed a number of errors over the last few years. I send them a message through their website when I notice an error and they have been good about updating. My guess is that Marcus Jackson's listing on their roster is an oversite, rather than them having inside info.

I thought that Jackson and Lott had already been granted the redshirt year, am I mistaken? Did they not apply in the fall? Why would it take so long to grant, or is there a procedural thing that says they have to wait until after the school year is over to consider granting a redshirt year to an athlete?

Interesting graphic put out on Tuesday. They certainly are trying to maximize the appearance of the last season. Hope we can make some significant progress in the "W" statistic next season. Go Owls.
