Sal Martinez - Preferred Walk-On
According to Dave Campbell's Texas Football Twitter, this Valley area player of the year DB will join the Roadrunners as a preferred walk-on.

It seems like we are already deep on the DB side of the house. We need to focus our resources on a reliable RB.

I agree; however, our secondary was a weakness last year. I remember sitting in the 'dome while McMurry passed over the top of our defense time and time again. :irate:

I would disagree that we're already deep, our secondary was by a large margin our biggest area we were lacking in. Once we completely repair that huge hole, then we should focus on the smaller dents

I do think we need some RB depth after the losses of Johnson and Williams, but the secondary was in dire need of some help. Division III and FCS receivers were getting wide open on us.

We might be deep on the secondary, but you have to remember that we play a 4-2-5, and we at least need to have 10 players that play in the secondary position so they can switch out effectively. But thats just me and thats my opinion lol

RE: Sal Martinez - Preferred Walk-On
I was under the impression that we had/have pretty good depth with the DB. Our main concern was the cornerbacks, which kept getting worked, even by division 3, and that was the main reason for our awful loss to Mcmurry.

Correction- I just watched a highlight video of our loss against Mcmurry. Our whole secondary was getting butt raped, continuously and intensively for about 40 minutes.

Great pickup. Seems like a good player and good kid. We will focus on RB next recruiting class probably. RUN'EM!

RE: Sal Martinez - Preferred Walk-On
With the defense UTSA plays, they need a crap ton of corners and safeties.

However, it's supposedly easier to find little guys that can play than big guys.

For that reason, the 4-2-5 is the defense of underdogs the nation over.

Agree in the 4-2-5 we need a ton of DBs. If anything it shows we are actively recruiting the valley. IMO an under recruited area with plenty of gems to get from time to time.

Imagine if we can set up pipelines there. San Antonio being relatively close we could possibly beat out larger programs due to our location and we play in a semi respectable conference.

Go Runners!

Semi respectable conference you say! I like to think that C-USA is more than semi. Just my two cents worth.

RE: Sal Martinez - Preferred Walk-On
I was thinking more about us competiting for TOP talent against 2nd tier Texas teams like TCU, Baylor, Tech.

Con USA is a solid conference but still only the best mid-major. Not a BCS conference like who we'd be competiting for talent with.

Can't wait for us to steal a top talent.

We better get lots of quality players here soon. Last year, Eric Brown transferred in from Fresno State (he was a backup for them) and immediately became a starter. Now we're in a conference with many programs on par with Fresno State.

RE: Sal Martinez - Preferred Walk-On
I think the startup label and bowl ineligibility skew the recruiting process a bit. Not to mention the lack of practice facilities for football and a good arena for basketball. Once we hit our stride, a la winning a bowl, we will out-recruit all FCS, all of sunbelt, and be up there with CUSA. I bet we might also steal some top recruits from the second tier schools like SAPuro mentioned.

UTSA needs to build a wall around the Valley for recruits...SA is considered the great city to the north to Valley Residents.
