Culture shock for me. I come from a message board where everybody thinks we're the end all be all in college atheletics.

Just so you know, as long as you stick around. Spelling will get you in trouble too.

And misusing loose versus lose.

My phone won't let me use those "emocony" things!

There, this thread is officially off the rails!

Maybe that's why he's not talking to the media until the deal's done. I mean "until Friday".

That's not good. If I'm not mistaken Russ Campbell (both Petrino and McGee's agent) is also Finebaum's personal lawyer. So Finebaum probably knows what he's talking about here. 03-hissyfit

It really is rare when Finebaum says something on air(of this magnitude) and doesn't know what he's talking about. We can say many, many things about the man, but saying he misreports information often is not one of those things.

Being contacted is not the same thing as being hired & selected - yet.
Would we rather have it to where he wasn't contacted or considered? (Well, yes & no)

Just like there was some unique circumstances that made the Petrino situation different than others, there are definitely some here that make the situation different than just a normal hiring.

Coach here have followed him here, relationships have been established (no, not like Petrino's), etc.
He doesn't have to worry about kids in school though.

It really is rare when Finebaum says something on air(of this magnitude) and doesn't know what he's talking about. We can say many, many things about the man, but saying he misreports information often is not one of those things.

Of course, the question becomes "what does 'contacted' mean"? I don't think Finebaum is wrong or making it up. But looking through green-tinted glasses, it could just mean that a prominent booster has called his old buddy GM to see if he might be interested if UA decided it might be interested in him. Regardless of what happens or whether I think he'd go or wouldn't go or UA would hire him or wouldn't hire him, I would be extremely surprised if he isn't "contacted" to gauge his interest. I'd bet there are 10 or 15 other people who are "contacted" as well.

I really don't see this ending quickly. At this point, there's no reason for UA to rush. Spring practice is coming to an end in ten days, it's getting close to as dead a period as there is in college football, and the people who are candidates now will be candidates tomorrow or three weeks from now. And given the deliberate, thorough and effective way the AD handled an extremely difficult situation, I can't imagine he's going to take the next step without similar caution. I just hope Taver Johnson does something to thoroughly impress Long in the next ten days.

Or the AD took his time because he was gauging who he might be able to replace Petrino with?

If he could handle the investigation and resolution of this cluster**** while making simultaneous complicated evaluations about the best way to replace him, then UA definitely has the right AD.

Like I said from the start, I would have fired him immediately if I were AD. I believe the AD knew he was going to do this before last night. Maybe he really was "evaluating the situation" for days.

He clearly did some serious investigation into more than merely what was already public knowledge. I'm sure he did know the ultimate resolution was termination. But he had his ducks in a tight row, and that's a lot easier said than done.

For what it's worth, from NBC's website....

"He was — and still is — beloved by his former players, and would lend some much-needed, instant credibility and stability in both the locker room and on the practice field. Given the very recent and established relationship with the football program, a McGee hiring might be the only choice right now which would trump going the interim route. Whether he would abandon UAB before coaching a single game remains to be seen, although those who know McGee and swear to his character would profess there’s no chance he would ditch UAB after the school took a chance on him."

We'll see.

At the very least I hope we get some money out of this for an OCS fund.

Maybe we can make a business out of identifying really good coaching candidates, hiring them, and getting paid to let them go.

We were ahead of the curve on Jimbo Fisher and (apparently) McGee.

Im not betting on it but COACH MCGEE IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE. I think he is proud of the excitement he has establish here. Also that would shock the world if he was offered and turns it down.

I love how we are all like "I don't think Coach McGee is going anywhere! BUT, I could be wrong."
