Kansas Beats Kentucky

Quote:You can spend four years earning a degree in “Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies” at the University of Kansas or a degree in "Gender and Women's Studies" at the University of Kentucky.
But the degree will cost you more at Kansas if you are an out-of-state student than it will at Kentucky.
...
That works out to a cool $139,328 for an out-of-state student to earn an undergraduate degree in gender studies at Kansas versus just $127,016 for an out-of-state student at Kentucky. That's assuming the tuition and board and room costs don't increase--and the student finishes in four years.
What a totally worthless major and to come out with that much debt!

Why does it not surprise me that you would say it is worthless? I mean a rightwing Christian fundamentalist who joins in the rightwing war on women. Shocking!

Oh the times you can have at the Gender studies job fairs. You know where you can find one of the only two jobs that the degree will get you.. Professor of Gender Studies or community activist.
This crap needs to be a part of a history or sociology major, not it's own department. More administration, and more bloat.

"This crap"? More of the rightwing hatred of women. But again, coming from a rightwing fundamentalist Christian, it is no surprise.

No, this crap needs to be fully paid for by the student. No taxpayer dollars...NONE, should be funding it.

OK, all snark aside I think there is education value in understanding, for instance, Scandinavian poetry written by lesbians. Not a lot, but in my opinion better to study it than not to study it. Different strokes for different folks perhaps. I wouldn't even be terribly annoyed if a school like NIU supported this research, as long as they were good at it....
But as you said, how is that not an English department-esque responsibilty? Why a whole department?

That's my point. Pretty much all learning is somewhat valuable. Heck for my languages gen-ed I took 17th century American literature. Why? Because it sounded interesting (Spoiler: It was not really not interesting).
For my Engineering elective classes I took photonics and photonic devices.. Completely aware I was not going anywhere near that field it sounded fun (spoiler: it was fun).
Adding departments has to be a huge part in the tuition costs.
FWIW when some college in Texas announced they were starting up a wireless engineering department I had the exact same reaction. That crap belongs under the EE or CSE departments.

Business Plan:
1. Start a woman-owned Savings and Loan
2. Loan money to Gender Studies students
4. Profit

Notice how everyone is responding to each other, but largely ignoring your stuff. There's a reason........something along the lines of " nothing pertinent to added" DB

Well I just had him on ignore, because he *never* really contributes anything but false arguments regrading my faith.

"Education value"? What is that exactly?
I'm not restricting anyone from studying it if that's their passion, but stop requiring me to pay for it.
Most public universities were set up as A&M or Normal schools for a reason: residents of that region accepted the proposition that they needed people trained w/ those skills, and were willing to pay for it.
I challenge anyone to take a vote and see how much of the (tax-paying) population is willing to fund these sorts of degree programs.
