I'd rather see Janish close.

It's far from time to panic.

2011, Lidge goes down for Philly, and Madson emerges.

2006, Isringhausen goes down for St. Louis, Wainwright emerges to close.

Until the bullpen implodes and it becomes a serious issue, no reason to panic.

Gas-can Graves....

I do not believe anyone is in panic mode, just shaking our heads at this stroke of poor fortune.
Paging Homer Bailey.

And now Masset is starting the season on the DL.

Considering his career numbers early in the season this isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Is anyone buying Chapman being ready as a starter? I think everyone is getting too hyped up over inflated spring training stats. I've heard that he's barely even used any of his secondary stuff in Arizona. I don't care how hard you throw you aren't going to last 5 innings with two pitches.

IMO, you have to put Chapman in the rotation because it's always been the plan and he's making SP money. I love the idea of having him in there with Latos and Cueto. I've always felt that Chapman needed the rest in between games. He just doesn't have the same zip when he comes into games a couple days in a row. He won't have that 100+ mph fastball at his disposal as a SP, but he'll get quite a bit more movement on his fastball if he sits in the 92-96 range.

Masset to start the year on the DL
03/28/12 at 12:57pm by jfay

Right-hander Nick Masset will start the season on the disabled list with inflammation in his shoulder.

“The MRI showed it’s not the rotation cuff, not the labrum,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said. “It’s just inflammation. He’ll rest a week. Hopefully, he’ll miss a minimal amount of time.”

Masset came down with a sore shoulder after his March 7 outing. He was held out for 12 days. He made two appearances — the last on Thursday.

The news about Masset comes on the heels of Ryan Madson’s injury.

The Reds trimmed the roster to 30. Corky Miller, Dioner Navarro and Daryl Jones were re-assigned to the minor league camp.

I'm with you that Chapman should be a starter, but it should be in Louisville until he can improve his command and prove that he can go deep into games. In his professional career he's only gone more than 6 IP once. I tend to agree with what Marty said last week that by the time this kid gets it he'll no longer be a Red.

At least there is some encouraging news that Arredondo is again looking like the pitcher that dominated in 2008 for the Angels. Give him first crack at the closer role and keep Marshall where he's comfortable and most effective.

Curious to hear from the baseball crazies on here what they think of the Reds Odds

World Series Champs- 25 to 1

Win the NL Pennant- 11 to 1

NL Central Division Winner- 1.55 to 1

I am planning on betting the Reds to win the WS and the Pennant.
I don't like the odds of winning the Central.

I think if the Reds are in contention before the trading deadline Jocketty will make some moves.

I don't mind the door being open for someone else to step up in Masset's spot. He was really bad last year and will continue to struggle until he can consistently throw strikes without having to throw meatballs down the middle.

The Madson thing really sucks.

Excited about Marshall...

Plus no more Cordero! Nice guy, but his best days are far behind him.

We just put $50 on the Reds to win the pennant, wasn't worth the bet for the Central. Also put $50 on the over (87.5).

I agree the smartest bets (of the four options here) are the Pennant and the over 87.5. I'd probably throw a few towards the WS too just for fun. I'm thinking: 60% of my stake on the over; 30% on the Pennant; and 10% on the WS.

The Reds got devastating news this morning: Closer Ryan Madson will need “Tommy John” surgery, ending his season before he ever threw a pitch for the Reds.

He was examined by Dr. Tim Kremchek in Cincinnati. Kremchek discovered that the ligament in Madson’s elbow was torn from the bone.

“We can sit here and try to rehab it,” Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said. “But that never works. He’ll have the surgery and move forward. It’s obviously not great news. We talked to the team and told them that we all have to stay positive. We have alternatives internally that we can turn.

“A lot of clubs have done that in the past. I did it in St. Louis when (Jason) Isringhausen went down. (Adam) Wainwright stepped up and we won a World Series. Arizona’s done it. A lot of clubs have done it.

“Dusty (Baker) brought up a good point. Madson got the job because (Brad) Lidge got hurt. Is it the ideal thing? No. But you’ve got to stay positive.”

Left-hander Sean Marshall is obvious candidate to take over as closer.

“I think we’ll determine that between Dusty, (pitching coach Bryan Price) and the rest of the staff over the next few weeks,” Jocketty said. “He’ll be a candidate.”

Left-hander Arolidis Chapman may return the bullpen.

“We’ll sort through that in the next week or so,” Jocketty said. “He will make his start today.”

The Reds do not have insurance on Madson’s $8.5 million contract. As a policy, the Reds do not take insurance on one-year contracts.

Madson was hit hard by the news.

“I talked to Ryan,” Jocketty said. “Obviously, he feels terrible about it. He felt fine all spring until just lately. After he sat out for a little bit and came back, he felt good. The other day, it got real tight. Even before he left yesterday, he said he felt fine.”

The tear probably happened recently.

“Dr. Kremchek said with the bleeding it looks like a recent tear,” Jocketty said.

Kremchek 03-banghead

I mean what are the chances that this guy just happens to blow out this ligament in this super short post trade window - without ever throwing in Spring Training.

Here is my question - who did the pre-trade physical screening of Madson?

If the answer is Kremchek - I would get a new team doc, today.

I've been dragging around a busted up wing for 25 years that reminds me of him every day.

I'd operate on myself before I'd go that route again.
