This. I don't know of anyone who would vote for Santorum other than extreme overbearing religious neo-cons. He'll drive indeps away completely. If Santorum is the nominee, Obama wins big.

How did Santorum win Pennsylvania? Granted 1994 was a good year for republicans and 2000 generally so, and he lost in 2006 with a lot of other republicans. But I still find it remarkable that someone with his views could actually carry Pennsylvania in any context.

I still like Carville's line about Pennsylvania. "You have Philadelphia on the east, Pittsburgh on the west, and Alabama in between.

btw CNN was highly entertaining last night. They had the precinct chair on the line from the disputed county. Her name was Edith. It was great television. They were calling Romney about 15 minutes earlier than Fox had it because of the numbers she was giving them. MSNBC was out to lunch.

In the closing weeks of the 1994 campaign, Arlen Specter and his organization carried every drop of water they possibly could for Santorum against a relatively popular, well-respected Democrat incumbent. With the national tide helping, the Specter-support was just barely enough to pull Santorum across the finish line, 49%-47%.

In 2004, Santorum repaid the debt to Specter in the GOP primary against Toomey -- one of the few times in politics that a person has repaid his debts.

PA is much more conservative on social issues than is generally understood, plus Santorum did not become so clearly identified with the hardcore right-wing until after the 2000 election.
