I'll tell you what else: he wasn't trying to "break up the fight" either. You could see him on a mission, going after somebody. The reason he appeared to be "breaking it up" is because he had his arms out, flailing around trying to keep balance, because he's so uncoordinated.

RE: Brawl at the end of the XU v UC game
Yancy, Mbodj and Ellis, six games apiece. Guyn one. Now, let's see what Xavier does...

CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati today announced the suspension of four men’s basketball student-athletes for their participation in a fight that brought a premature end to Saturday’s game at Xavier University.

Yancy Gates, Octavius Ellis and Cheikh Mbodj will each be suspended for a total of six games and Ge’Lawn Guyn for one game. The suspensions will take effect immediately and will be concurrent with the NCAA-standard one-game mandated suspensions that would be applied to Gates and Mbodj for ejections from the game for fighting.

“After reviewing all available video and giving due deliberation to the seriousness of this behavior, we have decided to take these actions,” said UC athletic director Whit Babcock. “We want to deal with this in a prompt and direct manner and send the message that we will not tolerate this from those who have the privilege of representing the University of Cincinnati.

“We have advised the BIG EAST Conference of our decision and the measures we’re taking. I’m thankful for the full support of (UC) President (Gregory H.) Williams and (UC men’s basketball head coach) Mick Cronin.

“Further, I want to apologize to our students, alumni, faculty and staff, as well as to our fans and community. We hold our student-athletes to a very high standard and take very seriously the role that our entire department plays in reflecting the overall image of this great university. We will continue to work diligently to represent the Bearcat family and the Cincinnati community in a first-class manner. There will be zero tolerance for a repeat of this behavior.”

Don't expect much. What gets preached in church and the classroom often isn't put into practice if it will have a negative effect on the school.

It looks like they only miss the opening conference game. They'll miss:

@ Wright St
Radford
Ark Pine Bluff
Chicago St
Oklahoma
Pitt

Games #2-4 are against horrible opponents and should be won anyway. I don't see UC beating OK or Pitt with the way they've been playing and then subtracting Gates and Modj.

Freshman Dezmine Wells, who had a mandatory one game suspension for being ejected from the game for fighting, has been given an additional three games by Xavier and will serve a four-game suspension. Sophomore Landen Amos has also been given a four-game suspension.

Junior Mark Lyons will serve a two-game suspension. Senior Tu Holloway will serve a one-game suspension.

#54 for X was throwing multiple punches. No suspension for him.

6 and 4 games isn't even close to enough honestly - there's a few players on both sides that should probably be watching the rest of the season from the stands.

RE: Brawl at the end of the XU v UC game
I loved the quote from the Xavier player:

"We ain't thugs, we gangstas"

Obviously a public speaking course isn't part of the preseason preparation at Xavier. Somebody needs to tell the young man that made that comment to keep his mouth shut. He isn't helping his university's image.

Mick Cronin impressed me how he handled the situation AFTER the brawl. Unfortunately he needed to address the situation with his players when the first bait attempt by the Xavier player occurred. He should have brought it to the attention of the official. Perhaps Cronin expected his players to react differently.

I will admit I'm not sure how much of a suspension you give someone in a situation like this. There were a lot of punches being thrown, one connected. Unfortunately for UC, the main camera caught the punch that connected. Later, other views showed players on both teams taking their shots (but missing). Apparently, after game festivities not shown were eye opening.

In all, my opinion is a weak response from Xavier, but let it play out.

UC coach Cronin has quotes out after the suspension announcements that the kids will have to prove to him they deserve to be back on the team and the 6 game suspension may not be the minimum. The UC players will also have some speaking to do with youngsters about their mistake, and not to follow their lead.

We'll see how it plays out.

this 'punishment' is extremely weak. The punchers and stomper should be booted off the team. ... Four of these games are against cannon foddder competition. Hopefully the big east cracks down harder.

The BE released a statement saying they agreed with the suspensions. Whether they are done with the matter, I don't know.

I would assume schools keep conference officials informed while coming to a decision.

If any of the suspended players have another incident like this during the remainder of the season, they're gone for the season...

Honestly just glad that its over with and suspensions are known. Wasn't expecting Xavier to derail their best team ever so their suspensions are what I thought. Now we got to figure out how to win the next 6 games without our top 2 big men. Lots of 4 guard offense to come...

clearly an embarassment to both UC and it's fans.....

I was satisfied with how Mick handled it and the comments he made after the game...

and thank goodness Mick didn't let his players talk at the press conf like idiot Mack did....

RE: Brawl at the end of the XU v UC game
I'm not defending what UC did...it was horrible and classless.

But everyone should know, UC/XU is a BITTER rivalry...the likes nobody in Big East has on the hardwood. A few years ago Sports Illustrated rated it the 3rd biggest/bitterest rivalry in all of college basketball behind only duke/unc, mizzou/ku.

XU always has called UC "thug u", "convict u" etc while they act like they are a program with upstanding, perfect student athletes. The local media seems to perpetuate this as well because it sells papers and keeps the fire stoked. Nevermind the X students use to come dressed in prison garb to the games, throw blue ink on the uc bench, etc. Nevermind XU players have more than one time taunted the UC bench/coaches etc. Nevermind one particular XU coach said in a public interivew he "wouldn't want to meet some of the UC players in a dark alley". On top of all of this, THIS particular XU squad is full of goons, thugs, gangsta's and hoodlims. It's a bitter bitter rivalry, both teams/players/fans hate one another with passion. The refs are to blame in this as they did a piss poor job keeping things calm and sportsmanlike...in a rivalry like this they let it get too heated. UC shamed itself and I'm not happy our players acted like this. I actually figured Gates was gone....maybe he should be, I don't know.

Oh...and also, Tu Holloway is a PUNK A$%# LITTLE BIT#$@!

That is one of things that is hard for fans outside of the rivalry to see. They have berated UC for years for being a Thug School and called Huggy Thuggins. It is still their number one thought when UC is brought up. That 's why its so ironic that in the past few years with Mack they have become the thug school (seems like they are breeding Wells to be next).

Totally irrelevant. There are plenty of bitter rivalries in Sports; Pitt/WVU is bitter. Nothing is more bitter than BYU/Utah. It doesn't matter.

6 games is nothing. Only one league game? Last time I checked, punching someone is assault. I don't care the context. If it happened at the mall or in a parking lot, Yancy Gates would be sitting his ass in jail right now. Incredibly weak response on both sides but especially for Cincinnati.
