Kansas announced on Wednesday that incoming freshman quarterback Brock Berglund, one of the Jayhawks' top recruits, would not be enrolling early as planned.

"Brock Berglund has decided to change to modified class scheduling this semester," Kansas coach Turner Gill said in a release. "This change will allow him to still be eligible this fall. Due to personal circumstances we have decided it is in his best interest to come in the summer with the rest of the outstanding 2011 recruiting class. Brock is committed to being a student-athlete at the University of Kansas."

The good news is it still sounds like Berglund is ready to come to Kansas and not experiencing buyer's remorse after signing his letter of intent last month.

But for Kansas fans hoping to see Berglund beat out Jordan Webb and Quinn Mecham for the starting quarterback job next fall, it's looking extremely doubtful, at least for the season opener. Webb and Mecham did what they could, but neither showed flashes of being a game-changing quarterback during the 2010 season.

Kansas fans hoped Berglund, a 6-foot-4, 205-pound dual-threat quarterback could be the playmaker, or at least show flashes of becoming one, as a freshman. He'll miss 15 practices, and for a freshman, getting those in would be integral if he was going to become a rare true freshman starter. Kansas officials did, however, tell the Lawrence-Journal World that Berglund would be eligible to join the team in the middle of spring practices if his personal matter cleared up.

Even if he doesn't join them in spring, and waits until the summer before coming to Lawrence from Colorado, he'll get his chance in the fall. But for now, expect Webb and Mecham to enter fall camp a step ahead of their younger competition.

Kansas begins spring practice on April 1 and concludes with the spring game on April 30.

"Kansas begins spring practice on April 1 and concludes with the spring game on April 30."

Kansas is south from us and presumably has better spring weather. I wonder why we start spring practice before them? Why don't we hold off as late as possible?

I know we are starting spring practice the Tuesday after spring break.

NIU and Ball St are the last in the MAC to finish up spring ball on the 23rd.
Though a few of the MAC schools have an IPF so they don't have to worry about an early spring rains/sleet/snow/ice storm.

Wisconsin wide receiver Nick Toon will sit out spring practice after underdoing offseason foot surgery.

Toon ranked second on the team overall and led all Badgers receivers with 36 receptions for 459 yards and three touchdowns. He missed three games with turf toe but earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors.

A two-year starter who will enter his senior year this fall, Toon is expected to return for preseason camp.

Wisconsin opens spring practice on Tuesday.

Wisconsin will be without its top returning receiver this spring as Nick Toon sits out following offseason foot surgery.

Coach Bret Bielema announced Monday that Toon, who ranked second on the team in both receptions (36) and receiving yards (459) last season, will be sidelined for the spring. The Badgers open spring ball Tuesday.

Toon, a two-year starter, missed three games in 2010 with turf toe and saw his production decline from 2009, when he racked up 805 receiving yards. He made the right call to return to Madison for his senior season and provides a proven target for Wisconsin's new starting quarterback.

The Badgers return two starting receivers in Toon and Jared Abbrederis, although they're looking for more options.

Bielema also said Monday that quarterback Curt Phillips and offensive tackle Josh Oglesby both will have limited participation in spring ball following knee surgeries.

The only two things I found interesting in this article...

"Budmayr notes that he's different from his predecessor. "I'll take a few more shots, a few more chances," Budmayr said. "But neither way is right or wrong.

"Budmayr will compete this spring primarily with redshirt freshman Joe Brennan. Curt Phillips will be limited as he continues to recover from his second ACL tear."

Badgers coach Bret Bielema described Friday's procedure as minor and still hopes Phillips, who twice has undergone ACL surgeries, will be cleared by June. He then could challenge Jon Budmayr for the starting quarterback spot in fall camp.

"It shouldn't be anything major, hopefully," Bielema told reporters following Thursday's practice. "Kind of just deal with the cards after they are there. If it's something they can take care of and clean up, hopefully, he'll be back full-time in June."

Phillips, who competed for Wisconsin's starting quarterback position in 2009, tore the ACL in practice last March and again in November. He has made a rapid recovery to participate in some drills this spring before the setback.
