RE: NIU 2011/2012 opponent updates
I got the opportunity to talk to someone very close to the Kansas football team a couple week's ago. He said they're a very young team with 60 underclassmen on their upcoming season's roster. Might be a year away from being competitive.

Ya if you look at the 2 deeps there are a LOT of Juniors and Sophomores.

I think we will be favored going into the game this year but looking ahead I am no so confident about the 2012 game. At least our defense should be stacked and the crowd will be pumped. It will just depend on how our young offense handles it all.

Wisconsin senior tailback Zach Brown is planning to transfer, head coach Bret Bielema said. Brown, whose best year came when he rushed for 568 yards as a freshman in 2007, was buried behind Montee Ball and James White on the Badgers' depth chart. Because he is on course to graduate this summer, he could become immediately eligible for another team this season.

..."Non-con challenge: The Oregon State game jumps out to most folks, but I'm going with a neutral-site matchup against Northern Illinois at Chicago's Soldier Field. The Huskies are now coached by Dave Doeren, who left his post as Wisconsin's defensive coordinator after the Rose Bowl. Doeren knows the Badgers and leads a team that boasts a talented quarterback in Chandler Harnish. Wisconsin could be tested in Chi-town."...

They don't have Zach Brown now. So are they a 2 headed monster now instead of 3?

Kansas defensive coordinator Carl Torbush is retiring after being recently diagnosed with low-grade prostate cancer.

Torbush, who also coaches linebackers for the Jayhawks, is scheduled for surgery "in the near future," according to a news release from the university.

Coach Turner Gill and Torbush are expected to meet with the media on Tuesday afternoon.

Torbush began his career in 1975 and has been the defensive coordinator for Mississippi, North Carolina, Alabama, Texas A&M and Mississippi State before coming to Kansas with Turner Gill in 2010.

He also was North Carolina's head coach from 1997-2000 and Louisiana Tech's coach in 1987.

His career record was 20-26.

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Kansas head football coach Turner Gill announced the hiring of Vantz Singletary as linebackers coach here Friday afternoon. Singletary completes the KU staff following the recent retirement of defensive coordinator Carl Torbush.

"I am thrilled to announce the hiring of Vantz Singletary as the linebackers coach for KU," said Gill, who is preparing for his second season at the helm of the Kansas program. "Vantz is a not only a great teacher and recruiter, but also a tremendous person."

Singletary arrives in Lawrence after spending the past two seasons as the inside linebackers coach for the NFL's San Francisco 49'ers, where he worked with two Pro Bowlers in Patrick Willis and Takeo Spikes. Singletary, who is the nephew of former NFL legend and 49'ers head coach Mike Singletary, has also worked under current NFL head coach Leslie Frazer of the Minnesota Vikings. The duo worked together while both were at Trinity College.

Singletary, who owns nearly 20 years in the coaching profession, worked on Gill's Buffalo staff during the 2008 season, where the duo helped lead the school to its first ever bowl appearance and the 2008 Mid-American Conference title.

"Vantz will bring great ideas on pass rushing skills to our linebackers," said Gill. "He is very detailed in his instruction to the student-athletes and will provide phenomenal chemistry to our entire program."

Prior to joining Gill's staff at Buffalo, Singletary made coaching stops at Tennessee-Chattanooga (2006-07), Hawaii (1999-2005), Southern (1997-98) and Trinity College (1992-96). He has coached more than a half dozen college players who have gone on to have careers in the NFL.

Singletary earned his degree from Kansas State where he played linebacker and defensive tackle during the 1987 and 1988 seasons. He arrived in Manhattan after spending two seasons as an All-American at Blinn College.

RE: NIU 2011/2012 opponent updates
The Class of 2015 has enrolled at West Point. Among the football players announced today are three new cadets from Illinois:

RB Terry Baggett 6-1 200 Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young
RB Tony Giovannelli 6-0 180 Chatham, Ill./Glenwood
WR Chevaughn Lawrence 6-3 190 Fairview Heights, Ill./O’Fallon Township (USMAPS)

It would be quite unusual for a plebe for make much of an impact in the season opener, but it's not unheard of.

Cincinnati QB Chazz Anderson transfers to Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Cincinnati quarterback Chazz Anderson is transferring to play his final year at the University at Buffalo, where he'll be reunited with coach Jeff Quinn.

Anderson has one year of eligibility left and will be allowed to step in immediately this season after graduating from Cincinnati in May. That's big news for Quinn, who is seeking an experienced quarterback to run his spread offense entering his second season in Buffalo.

Quinn coached Anderson from 2007-09, when he served as the Bearcats offensive coordinator.

Anderson has served mostly as a backup to Tony Pike and Zach Collaros in three seasons at Cincinnati. His best season came in 2008, when he went 46 of 75 for 520 yards in two victories, helping the Bearcats win the Big East title.

Should the Wisconsin game be our "blackout" game?...just afraid NIU and WIS fans will kinda blend in. I know its a different color red but it will look closer in the sun

Blackout games not at night seem silly. Utah did it against TCU last year and look what happened to them.

With everyone waring red this will be setup as a great PR picture as the last time we were at Soldier Field the pictures had a LOT of yellow in it.
