Belvidere North (IL) running back Austin Smaha is hearing from both NIU and Minnesota. He says both are waiting to hear back on his grades and he has visited Minnesota three times. He says he would take a scholarship from Minnesota over us, if offered. If we offered and they only allowed him to walk-on then he might pick us.
He has verbaled to NIU...we will see if Jerry comes in the last second with an offer.

Junior college defensive tackle Chaquil Reed (Wichita, Kan./Butler C.C.) also committed Kansas over offers from Northern Illinois, Toledo and Troy. Looking for a JC DT, maybe Bishop DT from Ellsworth will sign next week.
Why ouch??? according to your link NIU did not offer him.
We should not lose this type athlete. Has a chance of getting drafted in baseball. Looks really solid. We offer an IL athlete, win bowl games, the MAC and have a successful program that graduates players and we lose this type athlete to EMU? We should NOT lose high level MAC players in our own backyard.

I wouldn't call Sparta, IL the backyard. It's probably 5.5 hours from DeKalb, and kids down there aren't going to have any sort of loyalty to NIU. I think NIU also offered late, which may have played a factor, as might the depth charts at EMU/NIU. He can probably get on the field quicker at EMU than he can in DeKalb.

A kid 5.5 hours away may not have any desire to attend NIU now. This does not mean we NIU fans cannot get upset when an out of state school gets an in-state recruit. We are striving to be the next Boise State, so this means getting bent when a kid doesn't want to come here.
OK Chief.

I'm not sure where you think I said you couldn't be upset.

Your condescending responses are annoying, sorry. You are to the ILLINI as Nowicki is to TOLEDO.

actually, his response was logical. Since when does being logical make you sound condescending. You can be upset all you want about losing an in-state recruit to another MAC school. That doesn't mean there isn't a rational explanation as to why he didn't choose NIU.
