Going to a FB game is not an independent decision for many if not most students.
If your friends go, so do you. Your going influences someone else and a positive chain reaction takes place.

And canceling night class will do this. 2000 students will find this hip.I am not sure you could get 2000 more students there unless Lady Gaga (ok, maybe even Kelly Clarkson) was there. More than evertyhing else the school and student body has already come up with for the season and game. Thundersticks, blackout, tailgate whatever else they have tried to do, this will increase student attendance by 1/3.

Wow. If this is true, we really do have a sad state of affairs in DeKalb and society as a whole. And really, I know things aren't that bad and our student body as a whole is capable of making decisions.Canceling class I feel safe saying isn't and would not be the final influence for 95%, directly or indirectly, of them going to the game.

Go Huskies, hope everyone can get to the game and support the team and we make this a successful campaign.I will be enjoying the game in person, perhaps a few cold ones and a beer nugget or some Fatty's fair ahead of time.

By the way,not to change the subject, what is good at Fatty's? Wings and burger I hear. May need to switch there from Molly's for a change.

(Yes, I am off the subject for my own sanity here)

You guys will be on national tv and everyone watching will see the lack of students at the game. Perception will be that NIU sucks for football and its just not that great of a place to get the whole experience of college life It's huge and if people at NIU don't get that then the beat goes on just like the past at NIU. Nothing new but all the same.

Yeah, but we'll win the game and even Dekalb is better than Toledo, but then again; what place isn't better than Toledo?

RE: Northern Star calls for classes to be cancelled next Tuesday!
It's not impossible to fill up the stadium on a weekday game without canceling classes.

Tuesday, Nov. 9th 2004: NIU vs. Toledo - Attendance: 27,719

Canceling classes might be able to help attendance slightly, but it's treating a symptom, not the disease. The question we should be asking is why was the stadium filled up six years ago without any problems (despite classes being held)? I have theories and ideas, but I'll save them as I'm interested to see what you guys think.

Also, while I'm a football fan, the point of the university is to get an education. School has to come first. I know it will pain you guys to hear this, but I missed football games throughout my years at NIU because I had night class. I even had to get reporters sometimes to cover football for me while I was a reporter because of class. School comes first.

You mad bro? You seem threatened at the fact that you actually are playing a team that can run with you guys. Either way, it's gonna hit the fan Tuesday.

Even if classes aren't canceled, the Star is doing the right thing and getting the word out about the importance of the game.

RE: Northern Star calls for classes to be cancelled next Tuesday!
NIU should not cancel classes. It is a big chunk of the semester (one of 15 classes - ~6.7% excluding the 16th week which is Finals) for the once a week night class type. How many Tuesday night classes are there anyway? I imagine maybe 5% of students are in class on any given Tuesday night - the impact on attendance would be minor considering 95% of students would not be in class on a Tuesday night.

As for the Star creating some controversy, it draws attention to the game which is a good thing. But I can't see the University canceling classes on account of a football game, even though it is a big one.

It would set a bad precedent to cancel classes anytime there is a major athletic event.

No, but saying you should call off school because a few people want to go to a football game is idiotic. An SEC school would put football first, and does.Hell, they might cancel the whole day. What, maybe 1,000 people will be in class after 5:30, of which 100, 200 at most care about going? Give me a break.

If you go to school at NIU and have class, your decision to make. Perhaps one class doesn't make a difference. You are capable of that decision. But remember why you are there. The school should too.
Part of the college experience is giving a damn about your university, and if canceling a night class can help that, then I fully support it.

I love this football team and this university, but the idea of cancelling class is a joke.

Students can skip class. I probably would. However, this is different from the university taking an official stance and cancelling all classes. Leave it up to the students to skip and deal with the consequences.

There were alot of people at that game, but i think 27K is an overestimated by quite a bit. My memory is fading a little bit but it felt more like lower 20s to me. Can anybody else who was at the 2004 game offer an opinion if they think that number was high?

Right. And football brings in how much a year vs. professors and research? Again, think realistic. I know a professor who was at Indiana in the 1970's and laughs when people think of how much Bobby Knight brought into IU. At the time, IU was one of the biggest research institutions in the US. He said that it was all smoke he blew up peoples rear. Do some homework before you call out the academic institution.

And if you are from the Coolidge admin, it was a teacher's school back them and kids DID go to class. Your points are, well, pointless.

Exactly what are you suggesting I do homework on - Bobby Knight or people blowing smoke up your rear? My comments have nothing to do with how much money football or research bring into a school.

Apparently my attempt at humor regarding the Coolidge admin escaped you. If you had done your homework you would know that would make me somewhere in the 103-109 year old range. Stay focused, my friend.

Had to do a double take to make sure my eyes were not deceiving me. Maybe the hard feelings are starting to heal a little bit between athletics and the paper. Congrats to the NS, very nice.

Even if it were the SEC, I think it is wrong to cancel classes just so students can go to a GAME. Those who think that CLASSES should be cancelled for a GAME certainly have their priorities screwed up.

Putting education before football should always be the #1 priority (as much as i love the football team). This is on NIU for scheduling a game on a tuesday in the first place.

Don't blame NIU---Blame the MAC...they are the ones getting us weeknight games
Actually, if there is anyone to blame here it is ESPN. :)

I disagree Robert. I think it would be a supremely classy move by NIU to do this. College is more than books, that would be a great college experience for all involved. Like was mentioned in the article, that would be better advertising for NIU than anything money could buy.

RE: Northern Star calls for classes to be cancelled next Tuesday!
I can't believe how the cancellation of evening classes for one day is regarded as such a travesty. I'm a 5th yr. senior in engineering and I fully support classes being canceled for this. If they weren't, I'd skip it in a heartbeat anyway. Enough of this baloney about 'priorities,' its all relative. I've worked my tail off to get where I'm at, and I'm hoping to get my Master's, but I've always balanced work with play so things don't get too one sided. That's been my priority. If someone's prerogative revolves solely around work and they do not have an interest in school spirit or supporting athletics, fine. They can use the opportunity to crack open a book and study course material with the extra time they have. It's no less detrimental doing that than listening to a professor lecture and taking notes.

This is a special game, and our team has worked hard to get where they are at. There's nothing wrong with the school allowing people to take time off from class to come out and show their support for what's been accomplished.

Maybe you should reprioritize a little bit seeing that it has taken you 5 years to earn a 4 year degree.

Well, this teacher is taking a personal day next Tuesday, and my kids will be there... after having completed their homework.

It may not be a good idea to cancel classes. As said above, a once a week class is a large part of the semester. That said, anyone who is going to school for classes alone is missing out on a huge part of the student experience.

For what it's worth, in a choice between my Roman history Tuesday night class of Fall '93 and a home football game, I'm afraid poor Cicero wouldn't have stood a chance. I'd be in the arena watching the gladiators.
