According to Gary Parrish, they can get private phone records if they find out that there is a private phone. His speculation is that Pearl was using a private phone, the NCAA asked about it, he lied, they found out and asked for the records, he flipped his story and is now in trouble. I know we don't like Gary, but he usually has pretty good sources on this stuff. I doubt any of this would have come to light if Lane Kiffin hadn't opened the door. Something tells me the NCAA will take their self imposed sanctions and maybe add probation and a lost scholarship or two and move on. The SEC/ESPN deal will insure that their program doesn't take too big a hit. Still the PR alone is horrible, and I have no idea how the UT AD still has his job after all that department has gone through. Of course I don't know how RC still has his job either.

you nailed it....he was using 2 phones...Mike Hamilton is a dead man walking and Lane Kiffin is the gift that keeps on giving. 2 players and yes they did not sign with UT. And 2 other schools turned us in but I hope we dont act like Alabama did 6 or 7 years ago. The blame is 100% on us.

Pearl is losing 1.5 mil for 5 yrs...thats $300,000 a year.
When you make ovr a million a year, it doen't hurt too bad.
Besides....if Pearl makes a NCAA tourney or somethng 2years from now, they'll just give him a raise and reinstate the money he lost.

Losing 25% of your salary hurts no matter how much you make. The ban on not being able to recruit is worse. Plus these are just the self-imposed penalties. The NCAA doesn't like cheaters but you don't ever lie to them. They will come down harder on you if you do.

the 25% hit applies to his staff, not Pearl.

FoxSports

Quote:After admitting to misleading the NCAA in an investigation, Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl will lose 25 percent of his salary — or a total of $2 million — for the remainder of his five-year contract and not be allowed to recruit off-campus for one year.

Pearl makes 2.3 million a year. He's paying 1.5 million over 5 years...for an average of $300,000 a year.
25% of 2.3 million is $575,000.
Their math is fuzzy.
He isn't 'losing' his retention bonuses, they are merely deferring it to a later day....can't really say it is lost 'salary.'
Besides, 2 or 3 years down the road, he gets them into the NCAA again, he makes a decent showing, they'll redo his conract.
X signed a big deal at UK when he first signed there...after the tourney, they had to re-do his contract.
Its all do-able in the SEC.

Love this quote from Parrish:
Quote:5. So Alabama, Florida and Georgia allegedly have agent issues in football, South Carolina has football players living in hotels at reduced rates, Ole Miss enrolled a criminal quarterback, Kentucky has a freshman basketball player on campus who has been labeled a "pro" by the New York Times, and now Tennessee's basketball coach and top assistant won't be allowed to recruit off-campus for a year because of violations. Is there an SEC school that isn't sketchy?

Maybe Vanderbilt.

But you'd be naive to believe in anybody these days.
