RE: Memphis Landmarks
Poplar and Mendenhall looking east circa 1930
The property at the corner of Poplar and Mendenhall has been in the Bianchi family since 1922.
But the names and types of businesses that sit on the site have changed many times throughout the years.

Bianchi's Market, circa 1930. The building was constructed between 1910 and 1920 and was originally operated as a
general store by Italia Bianchi and her family.

Building later became Half Shell and then Belmont Bar and Grill
[Image: market1930.jpg]

Bianchi Bros. Grocery, circa 1946. In 1946, it became Bianchi Bros. Grocery, and Saturday night fish fries
behind the building were a major draw for the area residents who bought beer out of the store'sback window.

Louie's Market, circa 1950. In 1950, the name changed to Louie's Market, and in 1953 Louie and Jane Bianchi
remodeled and called it Louie's Grill. It went through several more incarnations before becoming the
Belmont Grill in 1983.

Pappy's Lobster Shack at 2100 Madison in Overton Square where the oak tree grew right through the dining room and then Pappy & Jimmy's on Poplar & Hollywood that moved to Summer Ave near the Drive-In.

Pappy's antiques, which filled every room of the cluttered restaurant: clocks, guns, musical instruments, paintings, moose antlers, antique mirrors — even a pair of aviator Amelia Earhart's flying boots (or so he claimed).

Had one in Whitehaven, too, just south of Raines on the east side of 51 (now Elvis Presley Blvd. for you youngsters). The one on Getwell was close to my grandmother's house. Ate at both of them. Served you out of aluminum trays.

1 Mar 63 - Workmen poured concrete on the 88th and 89th
columns buried 50 feet below what will be the basement of
the Rivermont Club Building at Georgia Avenue and Riverside
Drive. Eventually the columns will extend another 180 feet
from their base to support the building. The building, now
apartments, was opened as a private club and later became
the Holiday Inn Rivermont. Staff Photo by Bob Williams.
Photo taken 28 Feb 63. Photo Courtesy Special Collections/
University of Memphis Libraries.

I am quite familiar with that building. Always loved it. Spent many Memphis in May events there, back when it was the Rivermont. Best views of the River Imo.

Went to my high school prom there. I believe we had the Bar-Kays and the Boxtops.

I ate at both too. My grandmother lived near the one on Getwell. We lived in Whitehaven. Best root beer in town. Remember the wooden nickles that you could use to be a free root beer? There was also one in Frayser on 51 north I believe.

Great muffaletta sammich

I don't think their menu has changed since they fed me thru college (I always pay a visit or two when in town). The prices have quadrupled. Damn, I'm getting old.
