Realignment queens thats your cue......

-I don't think we'll see MAC schools leave and form a new conference, rather a few schools will drop down.

-The schools I think are most in danger of moving down to FCS.

EMU (no support or competitiveness)
BGSU (AD has discussed a move to DII)
Ball State (signed home-home with FCS)

-If 3 schools left the MAC, that would leave it with 10 in football and 9 in basketball. The perfect size, however if the MAC wants to move up to multibid status in basketball, I would add a few basketball only schools.

Butler (replaces Ball St)
St. Louis (new market, adds a rival for NIU)
George Washington (rival for Temple)
Dayton/Xavier (lower travel costs, long term security)
UMass (New England market)

This would give the MAC 16 in hoops and 10 in football while at the same time a 3-4 bid basketball conference. This is like old CUSA which had great hoops.

Firstly Bowling Green is not going anywhere they have been in the MAC for decades and unless a BCS conference comes knocking I don't see them moving to another conference let alone another division.

Secondly Temple is not a Basketball member of the MAC.

Right now I would say BSU is most likely to be on the Bubble of teams to leave and that is only because the leadership there does not seem to care, at all, about Football.

EMU for all their problems are improving faculties and spending the money on coaches that they need to spend lord willing they will produce a winner, and soon, but at least the administration is trying.

Temple may leave if C-USA and will leave if a BCS conference comes calling (like a BCS will raid the MAC anytime soon).

I suspect that we do NOT know the whole story here.

Maybe KC is on to something.

Maybe BSU suspects that the games will be with transitional I-A ISU which would then make it a SMART move.

Perfect in the sense that exactly 100% of these schools will never consider playing basketball in the MAC, and 100% of them will never be invited to play basketball in the MAC. Can it get any better than that?

I especially like GW who has had many years to become a rival of Temple, and yet they aren't. But it's also perfect because Temple will also not be playing basketball in the MAC so both schools can continue their heated non-rivalry in a better basketball conference than the MAC. Frankly, we should also ask Ga. Tech and UMiami to join so they can continue their longstanding ACC non-rivalry in the MAC. It would give us an even better rival for MiamiU.

Doesn't the MAC have a rule against doing this? I'm pretty sure they do.

Or maybe Ball State is planning on dropping to 1AA?

I doubt the MAC has a rule against this. They might strongly advise against it, but that's about.

The game is not until 2013. If ISU is moving to FBS, then this is a non-issue. The sky is not falling.

If that were the case, wouldn't there be some mention of it instead of "Gosh, we are so darn happy to get an FBS program to play us at home"?

It's news either way, isn't it? I doubt there was much consideration over the potential for massive interweb hand-wringing over it.

It's four years off.

How much money does the Atlantic 10/Horizon receive from TV deals?

The answer is zero.

The MAC might not seem attractive conference fit but what I'm saying is if you make a move to add the better 5-6 programs from the A-10 to the MAC what you'll have would be greater than the sum of the individual conferences.

West: St. Louis, NIU, Butler, WMU, CMU, Xavier, Dayton, Miami
East: Toledo, Akron, Kent, Ohio, Buffalo, Temple, GW, UMass

Teams in bold are NCAA worthy

I could easily see how this league could place 4-5 in the NCAAs every year and between this and FBS football would have a very attractive lineup for TV.

It would be a lot better top to bottom than what the A-10 currently is, that is how I figure schools will want to join.

That's what I'm betting and the MAC office probably gave them their blessing to do so.

Interesting quote out of the article:

"This is a meaningful series for the Redbird football program," Zenger said. "I believe this is another indicator which highlights the prominence of Illinois State University and its football program within the national scope. As we continue to plan for the future of Illinois State football and Hancock Stadium, this is further evidence that we are on the right track."

They had 12,000 at their last home game. On par with the rest of us.

A few points about ISU:

-They have been talking about joining the MAC since at least the mid 90's.

-They have renovated or are planning to renovate their FB stadium and increase capacity to 25,000.

-There is a moratorium on new schools moving up until 2014 so the time frame for the Ball State series is right.

They could be looking at a "football only" move too as we allowed for Temple.

I have heard a rumor that Ohio is considering taking its other sports out of the MAC and going football only to be part of a new basketball conference. Other schools may do the same and the MAC will exist mainly as a football entity.

Had the announcement been a signing of an FCS 1 for 1 with almost any other school and timeframe I would discredit the idea that a school is actually using this to move up.

I know Steinbrecher is adamant about signing a 14th school if Temple stays and I believe Temple will.

Bowling Green is not in good financial shape. They have the smallest budget in the MAC and that is with Hockey which they are looking to cut.

There is no way BG is going to get added to an AQ conference. The MAC schools with an outside shot are Temple and Buffalo with East Coast locations.

There was an article a while back talking about how BGSU was going to not move down to FCS but all the way to DII to play with Grand Valley State.

In contrast, Kent State is labled to be in trouble because of its attendance problems but with a much better budget situation and larger university in a highly populated region is actually in much better shape.
