Then he can answer the phone in the bullpen. for what we are paying him, that will be enough work to earn his keep.

He just wants to be on a roster. What it would cost is chump change for some teams these days. Why not? He's proven himself a great pitcher and maybe playing for a contender would bring those few more innings that he has buried deep inside.

Cards are on the hook for just $100,000.
If he whiffs three righthanders (if he is a reliever) in the NLCS, he has completed his contractual obligations as far as I am concerned.
Cardinals are sending the message to Albert. "You will always play for a contender in St. Louis."

Are you sure you're a Yankees' fan? 'Cause you sure seem like a North sider. Or did you just look up the Yankees' record in the World Series against the Cards?

Ole' Dunc'll have him droppin' sinkers on righties in no time. Eat your heart out.

Did not all of baseball had a cocaine problem in the 1980's? As I recall, this was a societal issue, so it is safe to say baseball had some players who were cocaine users as well. Drugs have been a societal issue for over one hundred years.

He could save his arm by pitching underhanded soft-toss style and would do about as well as Todd Wellemeyer.

I used to be the biggest John Smoltz fan in the world, then I started working for the Braves. Let me quote Drive by Truckers when I say, "There's lots of bad wood underneath the veneer."

He just struck me as a selfish, self-centered ballplayer.

I got that vibe from him. I've been to Braves Spring Training both at West Palm and Disney, probably about 12 times combined, and I met just about every player that's played with them from Dale Murphy, to Chipper, Maddux, Glav, Sheffield, Andruw Jones, Smoltz etc...

He always seemed that way to me. Just like when I worked a couple of years with the Grizzlies. Shane Battier was the same way. Really polite and nice when a camera was on, but was a bit of a prick when the camera wasn't rolling.

The #5 spot in the starting rotation has been awful all season long.Even if Smoltz doesn't improve on his Boston performances he's still no worse than anyone else who's been in the 5 spot. Then La Russa will switch him to the set-up man in the bullpen & he helps there. In the post-season he goes to the bullpen away along with Kyle Lohse.

If I'm not mistaken, $100,000 is the pay scale for the rest of the season. So, if the Cards drop him next week, they only owe whatever percentage a week's pay is. I am sure the contract is incentive-laden.
Could be wrong on that one, but thought I read that in the P-D.

he gets his 1st shot today. HUGE difference from his last start. He goes from facing the best team in baseball in a launching pad to facing SD in one of the biggest pitchers parks in MLB.

If it is a NYY/ STL showdown in Oct, Smoltz may pull a Scottie Pippen and refuse to go in the game after what the Yankees did to him last time. Plus, he hasnt had much success vs NY in the WS. His teams are 0-fer.

Smoltz - 5 shutout innings. 9 K's, including 7 in a row. Cards up 5-2 in the ninth.

Does Boston have any other players they'd like to send us? Surely they have given up on Pedroia by now.

What about the Cubs?

If Smoltz can pitch like this going forward, it's hard to see how anybody catch catch the Cards.

Even without him the Cards are going to be super tough. They go on the West Coast trip and hit terrible but end up winning 5 of 7.

Smoltz has a 1.29 ERA in the first 2 innings. I suppose that's why he only went 5 today.

They will be real tough in the playoffs with their pitching.

The San Diego Padres are not the 1927 Yankees by any measure, but he can pitch well at times. The Padres are known for pitching and besides their first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, I would pitch to any of their other players. You are so full of Garbage MemphisTiger 15 regarding the Yankees. I love my Saint Louis Cardinal, but to win a World Series is not the Yankees or anyone birthright. A Yankee-Cardinals is a distinct possibility, but there is over two months before that could happen.
