It's a great situation for Oher because without the Tuohys who knows where he'd be, definitely not holding a degree of any kind or playing in the NFL. I wouldn't have any issue with BCS for allowing guys like Oher to have a chance at an education if they would do that for kids without athletic gifts. While at White Station we had a RB on our team that copied all my work in our Spanish class, even the exams. I made an A in the class and he made a B somehow, which is pretty sad considering he copied all my work. Anyway, the next year he transferred to BCS and played for them. His grades were awful and his family had no money so he obviously got a scholarship. The guy couldn't even make an A when copying A graded assignments. Where was my scholarship? Oh wait I didn't play football. While I don't have a problem with Oher or my guy taking advantage of situations I do have a problem with how they select kids. Kind of funny anyway because BCS was a downgrade from White Station anyway.
I have watched this thread pretty closely without chiming in...until now. Chitown's premise is pretty close to spot on.
I am a Briarcrest graduate. I was there when the school opened. I graduated in the first 4 year senior class. I was a classmate of Mrs. Tuohy. She was a nice person then, but I don't know her now and haven't seen her since graduation day. I can't speak to her present day situation, but what she and Sean did for Michael was and is commendable. Were there ulterior motives? I can't and won't answer that because I don't know the condition of the Tuohys' hearts. Was Briarcrest(mostly Hugh Freeze) funneling players to Ole Miss? Absolutely. In return, Freeze received a nice job there under Coach Doh. Package deal for delivering Oher and Hardy? Maybe, but its not illegal and we even do it, too. I believe that he's now coaching at Lambuth, but can't remember exactly.
My son had some classes with Michael and said that he was a nice guy but not very bright academically. I have no doubt that he got tutoring and all the extra help that he needed. Evidently the extra help and effort on Michael's part paid off. He graduated from high school and went on to graduate from Ole Miss. Maybe not with honors from each institution, but he graduated. For that, I am happy for the young man.
My support and much of my affection for the school ended the day that Joe Clayton retired and Tim Hillen became the new President of the school. From that point on, Briarcrest ceased, in my opinion, to be a place where one could get an "academically excellent Christian Education" and instead started to adopt a "prep school" mentality with a focus on athletics. In the early days, Briarcrest was as much known for its outstanding fine arts programs and academics as it was for athletics. The band program for many years was the best in this region. Sadly, that is no longer the case. Just drive by the campus and you'll see where the focus is.
Is Briarcrest still a good school? I think so, but the farther they drift away from their original mission, the more difficult it will be to maintain those standards that the early pioneers of Briarcrest worked so hard to establish and maintain.
There. I've said my piece. This is my opinion. I'll step back now and watch some more.
