The talk show hosts did say that they hope USA follows in TSU's footsteps and not UAB's. they said that UAB will never amount to anything in football, unlike TSU..
They're going to play 1AA/FCS for a century before moving up?
Don't forget Division II--Troy actually has a national championship playing in that division. If they follow Troy's blueprint, they'll be in 1A/FBS just a few years after Auburn-Montgomery or West Alabama.

RE: South Alabama starting Div I football
Personally, I dont think Alabama needs 5 Division I-A schools... not right now anyway. Alot of people think UAB moved up too quick and now USA thinks they can just jump right into I-A? First of all, I don't think that's good for UAB. UAB has done fairly well recruiting-wise in Mobile. Now it will just be that much tougher. UAB needs to get their act together and make a real committment to football (ie, oncampus stadium) before people start referring to us as the 5th best team in Alabama. I know that may seem like an exaggeration, but if USA gets on a role or hires a big splash kind of guy (like UAB did with Gene Bartow), our football program could suffer.
I really would like the Athletic Department to come forward to at least announce officially that UAB is looking at the oncampus option. I also think that when that time comes, that they should place a link on the official UAB sports site so that it would make it easy for people to contribute money. People may be more willing to contribute when they know exactly what their money is going to (ie, an oncampus stadium).

I don't either. Let's close down the ones that consistently violate NCAA rules and wind up on probation every few years like clockwork....

The state of GA has twice as many people as the state of AL and we have three fewer D-1 football teams.

I don't know Louisiana's population, but they have:
LSU, Tulane, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, and La Tech.
Anyway I think there is a hold by the NCAA from allowing anymore teams to go from I-AA to I-A. So until that changes they will be I-AA.
Hopefully by the time they actually field a team, we will be doing fine and will have started building an on campus facility.
There is plenty of population in this state to support 5 teams. All 5 teams could use less than half the population of the Birmingham area and sell out there stadiums.
Actually once they get to I-A, not sure when, I think they will hurt Troy more than us.

Dan Reeves has actually been very involved in GSU starting a football program. Kennesaw State has also talked about starting a football program. Both schools have enrollments of over 20,000 students.

I thought they meant they should lower their admission standards and hire a renowned cheater as a coach.
