Not a word of dissent about Montgomery until yesterday. 05-nono

Is anyboy here even aware of the significant funding increase that has taken place in Buffalo athletics since Warde Manuel arrived on the scene? That Buffalo's football budget is now $400k higher than EMU for example? Gill has far more resources to work with now than his predecessor ever had. I am glad for Gill and Buffalo but there are many factors that have led to his success, not to discount at all his coaching accumen.

Gill did a great job but the team still finished under .500.

Do I wish Miami had won yesterday though? Hell yeah!! 03-melodramatic

I agree you could make a case for Montgomery as coach of the year before yesterday. My point was that there were (are) still important MAC games to be played and that you made the call too early. You obviously got LeFevour & Brown right though! HA

Fair enough. It's definitely a roll of the dice for us when we do our awards with a week left. But Shane still has a chance to redeem himself with a win Saturday.

Hey, if nothing else, we got some good conversation going on this one!

Dave:

By talking about "significant funding increases" at Buffalo, are you really trying to imply that Buffalo is an easier place to win than Miami?

I actually think the MAC News Media Association usually gets this award right. They've made some savvy choices over the years. They picked Jim Grobe (Ohio) in 1996. Grobe didn't win a title. But he had the Bobcats playing way above their heads.

My favorite choice is Glen Mason (Kent) in 1986. I think he only won seven games that year. But at Kent? Give him the award.

And that's my thinking with Gill (or Golden. I see the case for Golden, too.) These guys have overachieved.

But Montgomery? He needed to win one or two more games this season to impress me more than Gill or Golden have. Preferably two.

This isn't about Ohio's win last night. I thought this heading into that game.

Dave, the one week left in the MAC season were some of the big rivalry games plus the MACC game. I think it's not too late to retract this choice for one better.......after the MACC game.

No, definitely not implying it's easier to win at Buffalo than Miami but am trying to point out that this isn't the same Buffalo sports program that entered the MAC and if you are going to consider Gill then others have to enter the picture who have done nearly as well with fewer resources.

EMU lost only two division games as did Buffalo. The difference is Buffalo got everybody's attention with some "front end" divisional wins.

As for Temple, hard call. I think if Golden comes back with a similar or better season next year, then he would be an early frontrunner.

Hey, it's been an interesting year and many arguments can be made this year about year-end accolades. We will see how the MAC News Media Assoc votes roll in and I promise I have not tried to influence my members' votes. 05-mafia (just kidding of course!)

Good Lord Arro! There is no way we are going to retract our award. My God, it's called having the courage of your convictions and not cutting and running. That may be the most outrageous suggestion I have ever heard. It's been reported on the official school websites and local media and I completely stand by our choice.

Even those who suddenly disagree with our choice (for this one award) I think would agree that such a move would completely undercut the credibility that we have built up over the past several years. You just don't do something like that.

C'mon.

Alright, I was being a little sarcastic. But maybe we can get a little courageous and pick the 2008 award winners before the next year's season? The time for these awards is after the MACC game. I hope you take that into consideration next year. Also, I am a big fan of you website and think you do a great job. Just throwing out my thoughts for discussion and trying to be a little controversial, as usual.

LOL! I sometimes, admittedly, have a hard time recognizing sarcasm. I guess that's what happens when you take this stuff too seriously, as I sometimes do. It's a fine line, walking the tightrope between being a fan and being a supposed disinterested third party (reporter). I do appreciate your kind words.

RE: MAC Report Online Announces Year-End Awards
Why wait for the the end of the MACC to had out the awards? That's silly. The awards for the entire body of work during the season. To me, it was a race between Montgomery and Gill with Brandon as an outside candidate for the MAC coach of the year award.

Shane had his team go from 2-10 to divisional champs while losing a QB and three top RBs. Miami also played the leagues toughes non-conference schedule win MN, CO, Cincy, Sy & Vandy. Again, Gill was a solid choice too, 5-7 is by far the best UB has done since joining the MAC in the late 1990s. Brandon had a legit shot until his mid-season funk, but then the Falcons came on strong at the end.

This is a tough crowd sometimes on this board - I feel I've moved back to Philadelphia!

Why limit the award to MAC East coaches?
