MAC Report Online has announced the winners of the following awards presented annually by MAC Report Online:

Offensive MVP
Defensive MVP
Freshman of the Year
Special Teams MVP
Coach of the Year

Some of the recipients were obvious choices, some were not. I am sure we will get some argument on some of our picks.

Keep in mind though that these are not the official MAC awards which will be announced next week.
SOLID PICKS across the board.
Dave, your web site is #1 !!!
All good picks Dave - I picked your EMU LB as the Defensive POY though.
Agree. Solid picks. I would like to see a second team and honorable mention though so we can debate things a little more.

Daniel Holtzclaw is a solid selection too. This will be two staright years he has led the MAC in total tackles. Would have no argument with his his getting the official MAC award. He is a great story, coming to EMU after earlier being a preferred walk-on at Oklahoma. Went for the scholly at EMU and it has turned out great...and he has one more season yet to play.

Here's another EMU defender to watch: Jason Jones. Led the MAC again in TFL and the NFL scouts have been all over him for the past two weeks with one scout saying "I'm here to watch the hottest prospect in the Midwest." Jones could very will be the first MAC player taken in this year's NFL draft.

Dave:

I'll jump on the bandwagon - good picks. Do you provide actual awards (trophy, plaque ...) for the recepients?

We present each award winner with an engraved plaque. We try to work out something with each school to allow us to make the presentation at halftime of a men's basketball game to the award winner but the schedules don't always work out and in those instances we ship the award to the winner directly.

Nice! Keep up the great work.
Did you pull the trigger a little to quickly on MAC coach of the year Dave?

Nope. Still went from 2-10 to division champs.
It was too early, Dave.

Awards are not based upon one game. Every year for three years we have announced our awards with one game remaining. We feel very strongly that a full season's body of work does not get overshadowed by one game.

Was it too early to name Dan LeFevour and Antonio Brown? Brett Kern? Clayton Mullins? No.

It was pretty much between Turner Gill and Shane. We debated back and forth and made the call and feel very comfortable with it. We are not going to second guess based on one game.

Frankly if you want to make the award solely based on a single season turnaround in terms of wins and not take into consideration a divisional title, why not Jeff Genyk at EMU who had a four-fold increase in wins from last season or Al Golden. There were potentially several deserving and based on the season's body of work, Shane edged out some very good candidates.

Prior to Miami's game outcome today, nobody questioned it. Take away a critical pick in today's game and that would still be the case.

We also try to space our awards far enough apart from the official MAC awards so that we get a little pub ourselves and because the MAC's official awards, which will be announced Monday afternoon btw, are the awards that matter most.

Last year we had a couple of writers refer to our awards as the MAC's equivalent of the Golden Globes before the Oscars. I thought that was kinda cool.

Besides, what fun would it be if everyone picked the exact same winners? 05-stirthepot
I really think these awards should be named after the MACC game as that should be a key game to be considered in determining the winners. Also, Montgomery was the coach that took a good MAC team to 2-12 last year to a fair 6-6.

Turner Gill lead Buffalo to MAC East Co-Championship, an amazing feat for that program.

Talk about leading a team out of the wilderness, Buffalo has never won more than 3 games in FBS prior to this year. Ever.

Miami has recruited well and as traditionally the strongest program was due for a rebound. A modest rebound it was.
I agree, KC.

Heck, it was just incorrect. Gill should win.

Plainly and simply, what Gill has accomplished at Buffalo is far more impressive than what Montgomery has accomplished at Miami.

Personnally what Golden has done and the direction of the program in the future would put him # 1 in my book. Hes got his team elevating I'm not sure that Buffalo's ceiling is that much higher than where it is.

Actually thats a positive for Gill but I think his program has peaked as opposed to Goldens which will continue to rise.
I had either Gill or Golden with the edge to Golden. Montgomery never even crossed my mind. I'm not convinced Montgomery exceeded these two gents.

A trained ape could coach Miami's talent to six wins.
My, my, my.

Not a word of dissent about Montgomery until yesterday. 05-nono

Is anyboy here even aware of the significant funding increase that has taken place in Buffalo athletics since Warde Manuel arrived on the scene? That Buffalo's football budget is now $400k higher than EMU for example? Gill has far more resources to work with now than his predecessor ever had. I am glad for Gill and Buffalo but there are many factors that have led to his success, not to discount at all his coaching accumen.

Gill did a great job but the team still finished under .500.

Do I wish Miami had won yesterday though? Hell yeah!! 03-melodramatic
