Do you know when these findings will be published in a peer-reviewed archeological journal?

Great, that I agree with, now show me an example of a science that does not test. Please don't just say [insert discipline here]. Show me an example of a scientist saying such and such hypothesis doesn't need testing.

The overarching models are not be accepted as fact, they are constantly being tested to the best ability that they can. I would be shocked if Steven Hawking came out and said, "My model of the universe is correct, it does not need testing." What he does say is, "My model is correct. Go ahead, test it, prove me wrong."

Isn't that what Christians are saying too? Luckily for them an omnipotent, omnipresent, all-knowing God makes it hard to disprove. ;-)

Hmm. As he said, provide an example of one....

My understanding is that the Christian God is testable - after all, that's what they were saying about Katrina, withdrawal from the West Bank, etc. I offer up tests in that spirit all the time, and haven't seen any convincing response to date. Be careful with this... (You do live in Dallas, don't you?)

I'm not sure where you are going here. Yes, I am in Dallas, not sure what that means. My statement was made in reference to Bourgeois Rage's statement that Hawking throws out a model and says prove it wrong. I was saying that is what Christians do too. Maybe I wasn't clear on that as I was referring to them throwing the Bible out as their model. I was not referring to statements made by so-called Christians, like Popes or televangelists, etc..

I am also unsure of where you are going with the Katrina and West Bank thing. Can you clear that up for me?

Just a lame joke or two. Reasoning is thus: Katrina, etc. is God's punishment for infidels. Hence, my status as infidel is in some sense a test. I'm running on about 60000 days without God raining down his wrath upon me, and I live near Dallas as well, so, watch out...

I live in Reading right now, but I'm moving to Pleasant Ridge. So I guess East Side. Except for the fact that I've only lived here for about 8 years, and from what other locals have told me that exempts me from the whole east/west side thing.

Yeah, you are old, does the Guiness Book know you are still around.

As I said in my earlier post, a lot of those out there shouting about God, are the ones giving all others a bad name.

I am still trying to figure out how you are testing God? By not listening to Him? Does that mean if you die, God got you?

At the end of the day no one is probably going to know who was right until they die. At which point it is too late to change your position. With that in mind, going "your way" has everything to lose and nothing to gain, right? If you believe there is nothing else out there and your right, you win an eternity of nothing. If you are wrong, you lose out on eternity of bliss. To me it seems like a pretty easy choice. Even if you were 99% sure you were right, risk/reward would tell you to go the other way.

Yeah, heck I wasn't even aware of it as a kid growing up there. I lived in Groesbeck and then mom & dad moved to Harrison. I played football at Harrison and Reading was in our league (1973-75) and a big rival. They had real good teams back then. I remember one year (1974?) they lost to Ironton 7-0 in the semi-final game. Heck back then they just divided the state into 4 quadrants. They took what they thought was the best team from each quadrant and the top 2 played each other and the bottom 2 played each other and the winners played for the state championship. It's a lot different and more complicated now. I guess I'm showing my age.

Interesting, but it doesn't answer or even consider my question. There was a storm, right? So how do you determine that you are exactly 15 fathoms off the (presumably dead level) seafloor when your ship is going up and down over these monster deadly waves? I am not a sailor, but I have been at sea in a storm. I don't see how this measurement could be made with such pinpoint accuracy. Then there is the question, again, of how the measurement was made so precisely in modern times, when the BASE crew was not there at the recovery and there is stil the problems of wave motion and tides. You make a big deal of the exact depth, so that is why I am asking how they can know the exact depth, both in 60 AD and 2005 AD.

That is true if your only choices are between Christianity and atheism. But those aren't your only choices. You have choices between atheism and dozens of varieties of Christianity, at least 8 versions of Islam, Judaism, paganism, wicca, shinto, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc. If you take the position that only one is right, then you must choose correctly or perish. Who is to say that Catholicism is right, Mormonism wrong? If Islam is correct and you choose Mormonism since it is "safer" than atheism, what have you gained? The concept that there is a heaven and a hell, the concept of eternal damnation, and the idea that there is only one way are parts of various religions and not neccesarily parts of all of them, so i guess if you chosse certain reliegions, it relieves the all or nothing aspect of your choice.

So somebody tell me, why are the Baptists better than the Methodists?

honestly, I don't give much consideration to any god.

Pascal's wager. The implicit assertion that there is nothing to lose is false. Even if the Christian god did exist, I view it as a highly immoral creature, hence, if I believe "your way", there's nothing much to gain - I would suffer his wrath either way.

No women pastors? ;-)

P.S. I got your point above, but why not do an evaluation and pick one of them, then?

No, you would not suffer God's wrath if you followed him.

When the Bible was written, genocide was the norm, at least in the west. Thus, masacres such as Soddom/Gemorrah, the Egyptians in the story of passover, etc. may have been morally acceptable, but those are not viewed as acceptable by today's standards. Nevertheless, some view disasters such as 911, Katrina, and the 2004 Tsunami as God's message to man. Such capriciousness is immoral according to my standards, which - even if I believed in such a deity - are the ones by which I would judge such said god.
