No, I try to stay away from name-calling, but I push buttons in other ways. Sometimes, I will resort to name-calling only when I'm responding to a complete idiot. And, more often than not, I push buttons to make a forum a little more lively. It's not that I'm hiding behind the computer because I'm very blunt in real life as well and often, I'm disliked for it.
No, I'm not a humanities prof, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
Business does set the way we live our lives. Those of us who depend on the market for their livelihoods are usually more outgoing and they tend to rub elbows with a bunch of people they don't really like. They rub elbows with them so they can gain a client or two, or to stay competitive.
The blue-collar worker tends to work very hard and have very little time for anything else

All I hear is blah, blah, blah, we should tax the rich, blah, blah, blah, blah......from idiots that think tax cuts are giving money to the rich.
If ANYONE thinks a tax cut is the government giving money away to the rich, when it was THEIR DAMN MONEY TO BEGIN WITH, you are too damn stupid to debate.
A tax cut is nothing more than allowing the people that PAY the damn taxes to keep more of their OWN!!!!! damn money.
Oh, and JBR, I don't give a damn about low-income workers. ALL of us had a chance.
.........and to ALL you morons against Capitalism.......show me a better model in the world. Hmmm, yeah, that's why we have a higher immigration rate than any other country.

First off, Kev, this was an intelligent discussion until you joined the fray.
I don't remember reading about how anyone on this thread favors wealthy redistribution, perhaps you are setting up strawman fallacies. Perhaps you need to take a reading comprehension course.
I don't think anyone has insinuated that capitalism doesn't work, I think the consensus is: capitalism has its problems and flaws just like any economic system.
And let me spell this out for you: The wealthy, that is those making more than $500,000 in income per year represent about 9 to 10% of the U.S. population.
The working poor, that is those families making less than $30,000 per year represent about 68-72% of the population.
The middle class is in between there somewhere.
Obviously, based on the percentages of population, in the aggregate, the working poor pay more taxes than the wealthy.
And if you think that measly $300 bucks I got from Bush is a tax cut, then you need to take economics 101.
You wrote: ".........and to ALL you morons against Capitalism.......show me a better model in the world. Hmmm, yeah, that's why we have a higher immigration rate than any other country. "
This is a fallacious conclusion that capitalism is working. Consider that the immigrants coming to the U.S. end up being the working poor, paying most of the taxes and don't have a pot to piss in just like American scrubs flipping burgers at McDonalds.
The immigrants may have ideas of what America is about, but I guarantee you if you stop any immigrant in America and they will confirm to you that they have a piece of the sh*t sandwhich just like everyone else.
Do you really think working two jobs at 20 hours a day to make less than $30000 a year is good? Is that the American dream?
You must not have an insurance, because that is where all my dough goes. After taxes, student loans, and insurance, I make about $5000 per year, and I have a good job!

Great discussion there on both sides, Professors.
And then Kev waltzed in and focked it all up. :roflol:
Anyway, I don't have the time it would take to respond to each of those points you both made but I did want to interject something:
Is the human condition greedy? Or is that something we've been inculcated with?
As an anarchist, I would argue "No" but I wanted to hear what both of you had to say, Klutz and Mo.

In a word, yes. The human condition is greedy. I don't think there are any examples of altruism based on non-greedy, non-self satisfying motives.
Some have more of a greed instinct than others, but generally speaking I have a very low opinion of human beings. We are all scum sucking liberals.
No, seriously. We are all greedy little snivelling sh*ts. Basically, we are nothing more than thinking apes. We are animals and we behave like animals regardless of our ability to reason. That is why people before us cooked up ideas of religion and God, as if that would make us behave.
Humans have accomplished great things since we have ruled the world. But all that greatness leads to some suckiness as well.
Maybe it's just how we categorize things as being, "good" or "bad." Maybe good and evil don't exist as some cosmic forces or separate qualities. Maybe everything just IS and good and bad are how we perceive things.

First of all, Kev. I am not a professor and I don't think JBR or the other guy is, who is that Motown something? Anyway, I'm surprised at your narrow view on the matter.
What is wrong with today's youth? Is there something wrong with them today that did not affect the youth of yesterday?
Perhaps there is and I'd venture to guess that it could be all those damn pharmaceutical drugs parents and doctors use to control their children, rather than using good, old fashioned discipline.
Did you know that college kids all over the nation use more prescription drugs today than every before in our history? Most use Adderall for ADHD and anti-depressants for "depression" whatever that is (sounds like a blanket term for a nasty breakup or the human condition to me).
Secondly, I went to Ole Miss just like you did. I majored in the humanities and out of about 100 professors, I'd say 78% were very, very conservative

You should have seen the reading list I shoved down their throats. . .Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Che, Marx, bell hooks and many many more. . .
It's beautiful. They're all planning on revolting as soon as they graduate with $80,000 in student loans.

As a student of history, I'm surprised you aren't familiar with Spain's anarchist revolution. Quoting from one of many sources on anarchism available online:
Anarchism is a most misunderstood set of ideas. It is constantly portrayed as meaning chaos and violence. Nothing could be further from the truth. Anarchists believe in creating a classless society. They oppose capitalism as a system that puts the profits of a small minority of bosses before the needs of the vast majority. It is a system based on the exploitation of workers, a system that inevitably causes poverty starvation and war. Anarchists oppose authority in the sense of opposing the 'right' of any small minority to have power over everyone else. They oppose the State (meaning government, army, police, courts) as an institution whose purpose is to enforce the will of a minority on the majority.
Anarchists believe in class struggle, that the bosses and workers have no common interest and that the workers must organise to take over the running of society Ordinary workers are quite capable of running society. It would be done through a system of workers' councils with mass democracy which would be far more rational democratic and efficient than the existing set-up. Anarchists stand up for the freedom of the individual and oppose all oppression on the basis of race, sex or sexual orientation. The only limit on individual freedom should be that it does not interfere with the freedom of others.
Looks like those conservative professors got to you, D. Sorry to see that.
