it is not all about wins when determining the best pitcher. More important stats are, ERA and the amt. of wins the team has when that pitcher starts. The fact is that right now Johnson is not better than Schmidt, nor are Mulder or Wood. Defnitely not prior.
:bang: The past? i thought we were talking about the best pitcher as of now. Not the best pitcher 3, 4, or maybe 5 years ago. Get your argument straight.

tysramm1 Wrote:while shmidt has been a very good pitcher the last 2 seasons, I still dont think that he can be considered as a top three pitcher in baseball; he has never won more than 18 games, and he has never started 30 games in a season in which his ERA has been under 4.
Games started for 2002 and 2003 combined:

Schmidt: 58
Mulder: 56
Pedro: 59
Johnson: 53
Wood: 65

I guess Wood is the best pitcher in baseball. Who knew?

now you claim he is not only a top 3 pitcher, but, "the best pitcher in baseball right now". No Way
let me make it clear that "right now" doesn NOT mean 2001-present. it means last year and this year.

what's even more amazing is that Schmidt is 88th is Run Support, with 4.03 rpg. That's extraordianry! 4.03 is nothing. Every pitcher tysramm mentioned earlier, gets at least a full run more, except pedro who get a quarter of a run more. yet Schmidt is tied for the most wins in baseball.

here is a quote from Jayson Stark's Rumblings and Grumblings...

"It might be time to rank Giants ace Jason Schmidt as the best-kept secret in baseball. Over the last two seasons, he leads every pitcher in the big leagues in ERA (2.32), winning percentage (26-7, .788), shutouts (five) and opponents batting average (.193). And he's tied with Javier Vazquez for the lead in strikeouts (311). But how often do you hear Schmidt's name when the talk turns to the dominators on the mound? Not enough.
Well, it's time that changed. After his one-hitter Sunday against the Red Sox, one scout called Schmidt "the best pitcher in the major leagues."

"That game against the Red Sox was the best-pitched game I've seen this year," the scout said. "He was absolutely unhittable -- 95 (mph) on the black on both sides of the plate, an unhittable change and a useable slider. He commands the zone for all nine innings. And the hitters can't pick up the ball. Even when he threw a pitch in a good hitting zone, they didn't touch him. And that's a hell of a lineup he dominated."

To the true baseball fans, I don't think Schmidt is a secret anymore. Not after last year.

After a couple of starts arguing about who the best pitcher this year has been, it is now my opinion Tom Glavine has been the best pitcher this year, with Schmidt a close second

yeah you're right. But that was never the argument. "right now" doesn't just mean this year. It means this year AND last year.

here you go tysramm. this is what jayson stark thinks.

"NL Cy Young of the Half-Year
JASON SCHMIDT, GIANTS -- It's been a sensational year for starting pitchers in the National League. Which is why, in most years, we would be handing this imaginary trophy to Roger Clemens, Carlos Zambrano, Randy Johnson or Ben Sheets without having to crunch anyone else's numbers. But not this year. One of these days, America will wake up and realize Jason Schmidt doesn't just deserve to be in the best-pitcher-alive debate. He deserves to win that debate. As they headed into their last start before the break, Schmidt's stat line (10-2, 2.53) and Clemens' (10-2, 2.54) looked almost indistinguishable. Except that those guys with the bats have hit a puny .175 against Schmidt -- 40 points lower than Clemens' opponents. But that's not all. Since the first All-Star Game in 1933, according to the Elias Sports Bureau's Ken Hirdt, Schmidt is the first pitcher in NL history to give up one hit or none in three different starts (of seven innings or more) before the break. Oh, and one more tidbit: He hasn't left a game with the other team ahead since April 21 (14 starts ago). APOLOGIES TO: Clemens, Johnson, Zambrano, Sheets."
