You must live in a great region of the country if the only people slaving away in service industry hell holes are students, generally under age 22 and still living at home (thus paying no bills, other than the obligatory ecstacy prices when raving).

I knew off the bat your numbers were not researched, and since I have nothing better to do, I'll post all this information on how wage workers are poor because they're underpaid, not because they are lazy.

We rely on service industry workers, just like their parent corporations rely on them for giving the services that many Americans need. We should treat service workers with respect because they are human, they have a sh*t job and they are terribly underpaid. Many service workers work more than one service job because they have no other opportunities and being a two-job earner is the only way they can make ends meet. Consider:

<a href='http://stats.bls.gov/news.release/wkyeng.t01.htm' target='_blank'>Fulltime wage earners, by month salaries!</a>

This is pretty bleak, especially for those poor souls over 25 years of age. Consider the age groups when thinking of salaries:

<a href='http://stats.bls.gov/news.release/wkyeng.t02.htm' target='_blank'>Broken down by age and ethnicity!</a>

Now, juxtapose what the service industry style wage earner makes (above) on a monthly basis compared to what others make weekly:

<a href='http://stats.bls.gov/news.release/wkyeng.t03.htm' target='_blank'>Notice what managerial employees make per week as compared to construction workers (which is a sh*t job and I know that from personal experience).</a>

And just so you can understand the data....

<a href='http://stats.bls.gov/news.release/wkyeng.tn.htm' target='_blank'>Data explained</a>

And:

<a href='http://stats.bls.gov/news.release/wkyeng.nr0.htm' target='_blank'>This might be pertinent too!</a>

Enjoy! :D

You may want to read this summary of shift-worker trends.

<a href='http://stats.bls.gov/news.release/flex.nr0.htm' target='_blank'>Scroll down below the table and read the "Reasons for shift work" section. </a>

You should find this interesting! Only 3.3% of the people doing shift work (which constitutes the typical SIHH type job) cited school as being a reason they why they work the alternate shifts. If 80% of the SIHH workers are students, it seems more of them would cite school as a reason why they work the night shift.

Swoosh, did it ever occur to you that SIHHs are operating during school hours and during those operations, they have to employ an adult non-student?

Scroll all the way down the link and find other valuable information on our service economy!

sorry, i've been busy, and i didn't have the time to right a big response. Actually i didn't look at all your stats, there are way too many.

As to me not doing research, i looked at the bureau of labor statistics and i read "the millionaire next door."

As for me living in a great region, welcome to chapel hill, NC, a pretty damn rich town.

I just have one thing to say, have you ever heard of an "earned income tax credit"?

Swoosh, so you live in the Chapel Hill area, huh? Well no wonder you hate libruls so much! If I had to live with that whiny bunch of pothead n'er-do-wells, whining and screaming about the "man" and the "establishment" then I'd be pretty sick of libruls too!

There's a difference in having possessions and having your credit maxed out for having possessions. The majority of Americans live on credit, relegating the poorer Americans to a life of subservitude. That is why I advocate "DARE" style programs in elementary schools warning kids how dangerous credit can be if abused!

I suggest you look at the stats I dug up for you. If you live in Chapel Hill then I'd say you'll certainly find many student workers slaving around in SIHHs. If you travel to an area with no major college nearby, however, you'll find adult family people working these jobs.

I've heard of earned income credit. Why do you mention this? Is this a premise in your argument that poor people are lazy?

Reading one article does not make for good research. You should look at the many statistics I posted for you so you will not make claims that 80% of the wage earners in service industry hell-holes are student workers, still living at home with mom and dad (or mom and mom if the kid has lesbians for parents). :D

i'll write a long response later. But right now i want to ask you why they're hell holes. A restaurant (breadman's diner) is hardly a hell hole.

A restaurant is hardly a "hell-hole"?

Have you ever worked a day in your life in a restaurant?

Of course not. If you had, you'd know what Dio is talking about.

In addition to this whole debate, I'd like to add these articles:

For Immediate Release, 1/22/2004
Wages Decline; Bush Does Nothing
Since Bush took office, almost 3 million jobs have been lost. new state-by-state study from the Economic Policy Institute described the wage problem in Vermont
