Just to add to the list, Lyon of the Diamondbacks and Dotel of the Athletics are both now on the DL as well.

p.s. on another note, a Danny Graves imposter was spotted at GABP last night as he pitched 1.1 innings with 3Ks and got the save! :D

Davies isn't looking to shabby tonight. In a big game where the Braves really needed him to step up, he's responded with 5 shutout innings and allowed only 3 hits against the World Champs. 04-bow

i'm sure it was just the typical case of the team not being able to have a real scouting report. how hard was davies throwing?

Still, the guy's got to have pretty good stuff to throw 5 shutout innings. If you're on your game, it doesn't matter what kind of scouting report the other team has. I'd say the number of rookies that get torched in their ML debut is significantly higher than the number of rookies that pitch like this.

He wasn't throwing that hard from what I could tell. He was just throwing a good mixture of pitches.

remember bud smith and jose jimenez? what about noah lowry? he's a classic case of hitters having no prior scouting. it happens a lot.

When you consider how many rookies make their debut each year, these kinds of games still aren't the norm.

Hard enough.

Velocity is overrated. I'd rather have Davies throwing 88-90 MPH with good movement than throwing 98 with no movement. He really looks crafty and smart out there on the mound, and that makes up for not being a really hard thrower.

i'm not grading him on his velocity. i was just wondering.

when i saw him, all he had was a fastball and a changeup. he seemed mediocre.

Boy, he had the changeup working tonight. He was getting hitters all out of whack. Very impressive.

To answer your question, he was topping off around 91.

oh, i didn't know he had a changeup. to give you some perspective i was on caera 3 that night. that's the 3rd base camera, so my perspective wasn't as good as it could've been. if i had known he had a change, i would've thought of him a little differently.

Graves=***. Allows 5 runs to 1/3 of an inning. Jiminiez was designated for assignment a couple of days ago, I think Graves is next in line.

ervin santana's 2nd start of his career:
9 IP, SHO, 7K's

Wandy rodriguez's 1st start of his career:
5.2 IP, 4 ER, 1 BB, 6 K's

not too shabby. i guess these things occur more often than not.

They aren't as rare as say a triple play, but they still aren't the norm. BTW, if Rodriguez keeps that ERA of 6.35 that he earned after his first start, he won't last long as a starter. :)

i know his ERA is high, but he had a good game.

BTW, davies was sick again tonight. i wish someone would've told me he had a nasty changeup.

Hey swoosh, has anyone emerged as the closer for the Giants yet? or is Alou still using a committee?

no offense at all, but you haven't been paying close attention. tyler walker (who has always looked awful for us) has emerged as the closer. ever since he got put in the role he has had 6 save opportunites and converted all of them. in those 6 saves he has gone 6.1 Innings and allowed 1 baserunner (a walk), and 0 runs. dave righetti has taught him to take a couple of MPH off of his 96 MPH fastball, and it's paid off. we've won 4 in a row and the starting pitching has been great.
