Where are the students?
They don't appear to be at the Convo Center. I'm sure there was much more student participation during the Boone era. Now that the team is improving and much more interesting to watch I'm puzzled that I see so few students at the game. Have the Gang Green and the heirs of Boone's Goons been disbanded?

Gang Green and Boone's Goons have all graduated, and there wasn't enough of a push to bring in new replacement students. Hopefully there will be some buzz around the team next year, but that won't be enough to get students.

The only game where I saw a good amount of students was the greek night, i think against Central. They need to reach out to the student groups like the greeks, other sports teams, and freshmen.

A friend of ours (Ball State alum) drove all the way from GR to see Sunday's game. First time at the Convo and his first look at the stadium, he like so many before him said the facilities were super and then looked at the crowd and just shook his head-its really sad to have such good facilities and have others from other schools wonder what's wrong with EMU students, the Ypsi community and alums who don't support their teams.

Rock, I'm with you, this attendance thing is making EMU the butt of a lot of jokes these days-football well we've been bottom feeding for a long time, but men's hoops-I can't understand that one.

I too am surprised by the students
I can understand alums and old timers can remember back to the good ole days in the 90s (and being disheartened now) but students for the last 8+ years don't have that.

If students showed for Barnes and Boone at the Convo they should for Ramsey.

They've supported worse teams then this team.

I don't understand what is happening with students.

And what is a shame is that Rams actually has the program off dead center and heading in the right direction (joined by a few other MAC teams) and the team actually attempts to play defense and is entertaining to watch.

Good old days? I used to live in Brown Munson and my roommate was from Ecorse and he loved hoops. We used to go across the street to Bowen and sit as close as we could find seats at the court. Of course we lived through the Ray Scott years and it wasn't much worse than that. Lets see I remember Bill Weaver from that EMU team who I watched from high school, they had a 6'11 not to good center transfer from Wisconsin, Tim Bracey who probably was the best overall player and really not a whole lot else. There was always alot of students there. It was a nice break from studying (took alot of those) and it was fun. No, EMU did not win many games.

There was one good year of football, Ron Johnson, Eddie Woods and Bobby Windom were on the team and I can't remember the QB Steve something, but the team was excellent.

Oops, good ole days
circa 1988 - 1998. EMU played Pitt in the '88 NCAAs, the '91 Sweet 16 and then the Boykins Era.

We did have 10 good years before the downturn began.

I am a graduate of WMU undergrad and EMU masters, and now live in Ypsilanti. Coming from Kalamazoo where there was quite a bit of support for a team with less history, it seems almost amazing to me the lack of support EMU gets from the community. I know that there is the spector of UofM that haunts every effort that the football program makes. But you would think that basketball would not suffer the same problem with their tradition and the lack of a dominant program in Ann Arbor.

I've been to about 8 games at the Convo this year and I think that the community support is what is truly lacking. This is an affordable, family friendly product, what kind of effort is being made to market it to the community? I can't think of any significant efforts. It is made even more difficult when the non confrence schedule has no attractive draws, puts the team on the road for the first month and a half of the season, and then schedules weekday games in late December at 3:00 in the afternoon with no students on campus and many people still at work.

It is probably a combination of low expectations, an unattractive schedule, and lack of marketing that are keeping the community away. The economy has to be a factor as well. Ypsilanti is really hurting these days, and tutition is getting larger all the time. It s possible that many more of EMUs students have to work or live off campus to pay for their education and just can't afford to make it to games. It is also too far of a walk to expect on campus students to make. I would seriously consider offering 1 credit hour for attending all 5 home football games in the fall and at least that many basketball games in the winter. Give a bonus credit if the team wins the MAC (that would generate some interest I think). The administration needs to do more than just field a team, they need to find a way to generate interest for it amongst students and the community. GET CREATIVE

schedule issues
one of the contributing issues on the schedule is that we played in two tourneys, played at Marquette, etc. then had finals week.

This essentially blew a big hole in the scheduling opportunities.

Most of the choice dates were not available for home games.

Then we got stuck with bad dates... and it was like putting lipstick on a pig.

Playing a team with a 300 Sagarin ranking between Christmas and New Year's will draw flies.

It doesn't matter if Duke came to town. If you play the game at 3:00 on a work day between semesters and don't market the game, people aren't going to show.
