I right now claim Marshalls due credit for raising the level of play in this second rate conference.. You guys can say what you want, but if not for us, you guys would still have one bowl game, no national tv package and the the rest of the country would think the MAC is a sandwich from MacDonalds.
You guys owe us, if not for us, you would be what you were before, losers.
What a yank. You're a trip. Now that you've told all of US where we were before Marshall joined us (you know, the 1 bowl, etc., etc., etc., diatribe), would you please tell us where Marshall was before the MAC? Oh yeah...1AA. No bowls, no nothing. Yeah, WE owe YOU. My a$$ :chair: :chair:

Karl's point is the best one.
Marshall would be fighting it out with North Texas every year to play in the New Orleans Bowl if it weren't for the MAC.
I think Marshall has done great things for the conference from a competitive standpoint, and many MAC coaches have said that Marshall has "raised the bar" -- although with some questionable methods, at times. However, to give Marshall credit for the success of programs like Miami, Toledo, and Bowling Green...well, I hope you are just trying to be your normal, charming self and don't really believe that.
Miami had already won about 560 games and beaten numerous ranked or BCS opponents before Marshall graced us (once again) with their presence in 1997. w

Yeah, I'd like to see the conference have 2 years of BCS bowl money and another bowl when appropriate, the TV exposure of the added bowl(s), and the practice time of the extra bowls.
Let's see where the MAC is then.

I agree herdon is wrong headed, but I must note that Marshall has won the conference championship 5 out of six years. So, Toledo has only beat Marshall once when something is on the line. When championships are on the line, Toledo usually chokes. Now, for the iomportant stuff, way to go MAC. Toledo nice win, BGSU great job! Way tg go NIU. This conference is mooving up. I don't want to forget Miami, beating a good CSU. WOW....Proud to be in the MAC.......Go HERD!!!

Funny, 3 yards and a cloud of dust helped us beat #15 Maryland and #21 Alabama (in Tuscaloosa). Or, 5.8 yards when referring to Mr. Michael Turner.
Sorry, Herdon.....my memory is slipping....when exactly was the last time the Herd beat two ranked BCS conference teams in one season?

When Joe Novak took over NIU's football program, he made it known that he was going to get rid of the juco players, thugs and other detritus the previous coach had brought in, and focus on building the program with recruits from the Chicagoland area. He let it be known it would take a while to build a winner with scholarship players, particularly given his insistence on only recruiting kids of the utmost character and integrity. Coach Novak stuck to this plan through our 23-game losing streak, through years of mediocre play, through last season's disappointing finish.
At no point has Coach Novak stated " we need to follow Marshall's lead", nor has he used Marshall as an example of what we want to achieve. He had a vision of what he wanted NIU's football to be, and he is in the process of realizing that vision, independent of any outside example.
Point being Marshall has had absolutely no influence, impact or effect on NIU's football success. None. Zero. Zilch. Nada.
For the record, I'd also add I have nothing against Marshall, nor their legions of loyal fans. But, to claim that Marshall is somehow deserving of credit for the resurgence of OUR program is ludicrous beyond belief.

Well said, FC. This is an NIU revival and more correctly a building of a top MAC program that began late in December 1996 when Joe Novak was hired.
