Marshall till 1997. It used to be one of the more powerful I-AA conf, until they stated letting every private school in the Carolina's in. When Marshall was there the line up looked like this
Marshall
Appalachian State
Chattanooga
Citadel
East Tennessee State
Furman
Georgia Southern
Western Carolina
Virginia Military Insitue
And at least 1-3 made the playoffs each year, usually 2. Now in I-AA you have 16 spots and before 2001 they took the top 16 teams. Its not quite like that now, now its regionalized and one of the top 16 teams can be excluded.
Now the SoCon looks like this:
All Sports
Appalachian St.
Chattanooga
Citadel
Elon
Furman
Georgia Southern
Western Carolina
Wofford
Basketball
N.C. Greensboro
Charleston
Davidson (All sports 1936-1986 Southern Conference, invited back as basketball 2001)
Gone
Marshall - I-A - MAC-CUSA
VMI - Big South
ETSU - Dropped Football 2004 - In the ASUN
The SoCon will be looking to replace ETSU. Top Canidates I would say are
1.Coastal Carolina - Fits nicely in the mold of where the SoConf is, its a new program on the rise.
2.Jacksonville State - Gives some much needed recruiting in Florida fo SoCon
3.Eastern Kentucky - Could bridge the gap for Chattanooga and not make them start looking at the OVC or Gateway.
