Insane asylums existed for a reason back then for people like that.

As a society, we seem to be doing a worse and worse job of dealing with our mentally impaired population. I suspect most of our homeless population is made up of the mentally ill. Some of these folks are not just a danger to themselves---but they are a danger to the public at large. We really need to go back to asylums---and maybe do a better job of early mental health interventions so we salvage some of the mentally ill before they get to the point where they cant be saved.

Agreed, but it'll never happen because people go overboard with the whole cruel and unusual punishment argument about insane asylums in the past.
