Thats what I think. The Navy is perfectly capable of interdicting the cartel delivery system and degrading cartel production without stepping foot in Venezuela. I suspect it was just a excellent excuse to unseat an illegitimate dictator who was becoming far too cozy with outlaw nations like China, Russia, and Iran. I also think it was a shot across the bow for China's activities around Taiwan and Russia's continued war in Ukraine. In a way, it was Trump saying "Look what we can do anytime we want----likely pretty much anywhere we want to". Not saying we would ever attempt to take out Putin or Xi---but we certainly have the ability to completely block any progress for Putin in Ukraine or make Taiwan a MUCH bigger thorn in China's side if we decide its what best suits us. lol---As the Ukraine war appears near the beginning of its FIFTH year of fighting, its got to be sobering for Putin to see how a REAL military carries out a 1-day decapitation victory. Maybe a side affect of Trumps decision will be Putin finally realizes how wasteful continuing the war really is (especially when the peace plan on the table generally gives the Russians most of what they want). Hopefully, this will also deter further attempts by Russia and China to try to create spheres of influence in the western Hemisphere affairs---which would be a very good thing. I also think JR is right----this is also a message to Cuba---better not misbehave. I'd also add---I bet Mexico will be about as cooperative as we would want when it come to drug and migrant interdiction for the foreseeable future.

You need to get off X. The US has been doing this for centuries. ie: El Chapo.

The NFA was passed in 1934, so we have not been charging people with NFA violations for centuries.

El Chapo was arrested in Mexico and extradited to the US, so that isn’t a good example. Manuel Noriega would be a better example.

El Chapo was charged with “using a firearm in furtherance of drug crime” which seems much easier convict someone of who wasn’t in the US once you tie that their drug crimes crossed US borders.

NFA laws are possession laws. It is unlawful to possess a machine gun unless it was placed on the registry before it closed in 1986, and it was transferred to you via the appropriate ATF form (4) and background process including fingerprints. Destructive devices are the same way without the registry date.

It would seem very hard to convict someone of possessing something outlawed by the United States unless they were physically in the United States. We can’t outlaw the possession of items in other countries.

If I had to guess how that charge is in the mix----maybe he is part of a conspiracy designed to move drugs and supply his cartel members in the US with those weapons (perhaps the weapons in the US were traced to the Venezuelan military armory). Its going to be a public document, so eventually, we will see the basis of the charge.
