Mamdani not concerned by police exodus, vows to fix it by replacing cops with social
Quote:Socialist mayor-elect of New York City Zohran Mamdani said Friday that he is not concerned about backlash from law enforcement following his election victory and reiterated his plan to have social workers carry out certain duties currently done by law enforcement.
During a visit to Puerto Rico, Mamdani was asked if he was “worried” about backlash from the “law enforcement community.”
“I’m not worried about the backlash. What I’m worried about, frankly, is the continuation of a retention crisis that we’ve seen only deepen during the course of this campaign,” Mamdani said.
He argued that the ongoing decline in police staffing is not due to his policies or rhetoric but rather to the strain placed on officers. Mamdani reiterated his plan to remove certain responsibilities from police and transfer them to social workers through the creation of a new Department of Community Safety.
“When we began, there were about 200 officers leaving a month, and by the end of the campaign, it was about 350,” the mayor-elect said. “And a lot of that has to do with the fact that we’ve asked police officers for far too long to do much more than just police work. We’ve asked them to be responding to the mental health crisis and the homelessness crisis, and that’s why we’re going to create a Department of Community Safety that will be tasked with accomplishing those facts and allowing police officers to be police officers.”
Mamdani’s relationship with law enforcement has been contentious throughout his campaign. He has previously called for abolishing the police and continues to push for the elimination of cashless bail, sparking criticism from police unions and veteran officers.
In June, NYPD Detectives’ Endowment Association president Scott Munro warned that Mamdani’s election could lead to resignations among officers.
“If you put a guy like him in there, our people are going to get hurt, and nobody’s going to want the job. It’s going to put recruitment back five more steps,” Munro said in a statement to the New York Post.
“I’ve had guys call me and say ‘If he wins, I’m quitting,’” a police source also told the outlet “It’s just weird that New York City would vote for him. I know he’s not here for the police.”

How soon until ABC brings back NYPD Blue, replacing the likes of Detective Andy Sipowicz and his squad with a bunch of social workers working homicide.

I welcome NYC's police to Tennessee. I hope the State of Tennessee and state cities and towns are implementing recruitment plans.

NYC voted for it. They can figure it out. How long before Wall Street moves to Miami?

The Stock exchange moving out of NYC would be the Crown Jewel of unintended consequence of this Mamdami thing, but I don't think it will happen. It is 4 years of whatever and it seems impossible that this would go on for a second term... right?
That said, if the police exodus continues and NYC really becomes that unsafe - who knows ... maybe it could happen?

I'll admit, now presents a great opportunity for criminals and illegals to move to NYC.

NYC does not have a divine right stock exchange monopoly.
“The Texas Stock Exchange (TXSE) is a new, fully electronic national securities exchange headquartered in Dallas that is expected to launch for trading and listings in 2026. It has received formal approval from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to operate as a national exchange, positioning itself as a direct competitor to the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq. “ (Source: Google AI)
Publicly traded companies have a fiduciary responsibility to represent the interest of shareholders and their CEO’s will have to justify in these days of electronic communication and connectivity why NYC is better than Texas.
Texas is also a rival to another deep blue state (Delaware) for incorporation. Tesla has already “gone to Texas”.

Apparently so, lol. It was a rhetorical question. :)
Rest of the story. There are a lot of idiots in NYC, have been for decades (even more now), and many of them don't speak English.
I went to see Pele play his last soccer match at Giants stadium, the place was sold out (75K+), and I didn't hear a word of English all night. True story. And that was 1977.

I don't disagree that we ask police officers to be much more than officers. That being said, I haven't seen a solution that works to help relieve the extra crap that is above and beyond what the officers should be doing.
I think the same thing about teachers and how they are more of a parent to their students in many districts than the actual parents are. The teachers have to be the empathetic mother or father figure at the same time as trying to prepare the student to be a good citizen in society.
Something has to change, but I don't know the best solutions. And don't say "it is on the parents" because that has gotten us nowhere the last 30 years.

I would not mind sending in the social workers in support of the officers, I would not cut officers. Having worked in health care industry my entire career social workers, nurses, aides, techs, etc are often attacked and injured by patients- either intentionally or accidentally.
Anecdotally, my experience is also the social workers have their own mental health issues. There is something about that field that gravitates people with their own inner-conflicts- as I have often heard even by social workers, they are looking to help diagnose and treat their own issues

Wasn't that long ago teachers wouldn't put up with any pshit from bad kids, and they would be sent home. What changed is the parents aren't worth a damn BECAUSE they EXPECT the schools to take care of them with 3 meals a day and not failing the kids that should fail etc. But THIS was all part of the plan in the 90s when the Left took over the education system during the Clinton administration.

No Child Left Behind was the big change, that is when they stopped being able to remove the kids who weren't there to learn. That is on Bush (with an assist from Ted Kennedy).
