But if Schumer and Trump cannot come to an agreement, there is no way to prevent it.

John Thune could make the Senate work like it was designed.

Yes, he could. And he should. But will he? That remains to be seen.

Not sure what you mean, but very doubtful that Thune could get 50 votes (+ Vance) to pass it on the floor of the Senate, if all 47 D’s are unanimous in opposition.

So if Trump gets to issue mass government layoffs---does that mean we have to thank Schumer for helping to reduce the size of government?

The Dem Senate leadership apparently are under pressure from their TDS inflicted wing to stand up to Trump despite the consequences.

Meanwhile, "The White House budget director instructed agencies to prepare for employee firings if funding lapses, beyond typical furloughs and missed paychecks."

https://www.wsj.com/politics/policy/gove..._lead_pos2

The intended threat is actually an opportunity to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of legitimate federal functions if the Republicans stand firm for the inevitable short term disruptions. My guess is the Dems will cave while claiming victory.

The well-being of those individuals isn't something I, you, or even governments are responsible for. I acknowledge that perspective may seem cold, but if we consider it as a business, the needs of the business ultimately determine what happens. If I'm a federal employee, I likely receive fair compensation and should be aware, especially nowadays, that a shutdown could occur any year. Ideally they should be prepared for such a possibility, even though it's easier said than done these days.

I tend to agree. All this nonsense from them is just posturing so they can claim to at least be trying to do something for the people. They're going to flood us with hypotheticals in which gloom and doom will be featured, meanwhile the vast majority of the American public will go about their business just lke any other day.

Quote:Dems not budging on government shutdown demands ahead of high-stakes Trump meeting, Jeffries suggests
Democrats are demanding to extend COVID-era Obamacare subsidies, which are due to expire at the end of this year
By Elizabeth Elkind Fox News
Published September 29, 2025 11:58am EDT

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., has signaled that Democrats are not budging on their key demands ahead of a high-stakes meeting with President Donald Trump about government funding.

The federal government will enter a partial shutdown at midnight on Wednesday if Republicans and Democrats do not reach a deal on funding priorities for fiscal year (FY) 2026, which ends at the end of the day on Sept. 30.

All but one House Democrat rejected Republicans' plan for a roughly straightforward extension of FY 2025 funding levels, through Nov. 21, aimed at giving appropriators more time for a longer-term deal.

Jeffries blasted the measure — called a continuing resolution (CR) — as partisan and has demanded that Republicans make concessions on healthcare in exchange for Democratic support.

He signaled during a last-minute news conference on Monday that Democrats would reject anything less than a written plan to extend Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies enacted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

I'm sure he could get 50 votes.
Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Rand Paul, Thom Tillis are “no” in that circumstance. That leaves 49 in favor.

Tillis immune to pressure now that he is not running again.

Keep polishing that turd. It will never work. The public will ALWAYS blame the party in charge. The R's hold all the cards. They will own this, bigly.
