VT AD Whit Babcock to B.O.V.: we need another $52M to contend in ACC
“For us it’s really simple,” he said. “We need to get better (in football) because the better you do, the more money you get from the ACC. So, the recipe is still the same. Be really good in football. Be good in some of your other sports. Don’t operate under scandal and have very good academics. But yes, there’s a sense of urgency in the near-term.”

And if I was Babcock, I'd respond that, in recent years, Virginia Tech has been getting the results it's paid for.

Anyone in leadership at VT should be aware of the advantages of being in the P2 as opposed to their current conference, but I get the sense this is the AD having a come to Jesus meeting with the powers that be.
While there are specific asks being made here, the subtext is that revenue needs to increase. Investments will only go so far if you're not in a position to capitalize on them later.
I'm not sure if there's some sort of internal political issue at VT that has hindered them from getting into the P2, but this seems to be a presentation that the current trajectory won't work. And perhaps the issue has been the willingness to invest? If the Board takes these pleas seriously then perhaps the P2 is still an option.

You both missed the additional information which came out in regards to this. He also cited the current pay differential between the conferences and then provided one which had the SEC making 132 million in media revenue by 2034, the Big Ten 128 million, and the Big 12 and ACC in the 45-55 million range plus whatever bonus for being competitive the ACC pays. The point was there would be no making up what he guessed at best would be nearly a 60 million dollar gap. So the current projections for their athletic department were dire and the future projection for what the competition would have was catastrophic.
