Former WAC conference mates end up looking for a new conference as well
Man, without New Mexico State, that conference absolutely crumbled to nothing almost instantly.
The WAC let brand new schools who were only around a year or two (and possibly made the deals before they were even members) vote to remove Chicago State.
Many of them quickly bolted like I predicted, and now, just a couple other moves and the WAC is down to 5 members lol.
I feel for Utah Tech because they were a new D1 and the WAC was such a logical home. Southern Utah as well, as they were caught in a wave of changes (and I have a soft spot for SUU going back to Chicagos Mid Continent days.
Now, it’s likely the end of the line with left behind losers like Tarleton, Abilene, Arlington moving on to become a pain in the a$$ for another group of schools, and the Utah schools searching for a home.
Hopefully the Utah schools land well. They do have the benefit of being near each other for travel. Makes them each a stronger prospect then either would be alone.
Without NMSU, the conference was doomed. The Texans threw their weight around, demanded the HQ move to them, they hired an idiot commissioner that never really anny sense, but was close with some certain conference schools (ahem, not naming names) and have since mismanaged every aspect of the conference until total collapse.
They’ll claim it was inevitable, that this or that school “had no choice” but to accept whatever offer or other excuses, but it was all their own faults.

Todor called the demise of the WAC back in 2021. Incredible.

RE: Former WAC conference mates end up looking for a new conference as well
As frustrating as the WAC experience was for some Cougar fans, the important thing is Chicago State has a home now, while some of their former WAC colleagues and critics will now be left scrambling.
Teams CSU has the most shared history with have fared OK though, fortunately.
Southern Utah will head back to the Big Sky.
Utah Valley, one of CSU’s longest term conference mates will head to the Big West.
Some others are going some different places as well, leaving the conference nearly officially empty after this year, and possibly dead. 2 have already departed, with 4 more leaving after next year.
The remaining schools have been unable to hire or maintain steady leadership in the home office and likely do not have the competence to attract new members.
Abilene Christian, Texas Arlington, and Tarleton have no announced plans as far as I know, and will likely be spending the next year jockeying for position to find new homes wherever they can, as none of them have the wherewithal or draw to help rebuild a conference.
I can’t help but remember back to when Tarleton joined the league, and their fans were boasting that within 5 years, they would be running the league. I didn’t anticipate that could possibly be true, but now I see they were correct after all. And they have certainly done a bang up job of it.
I just hope President Curley is smart enough to remember to turn the lights out during his inglorious exit.

I looked it up. Yikes. Another house of cards, smh.
I’m just glad Chicago State and its long term conference mates all found good homes and won’t have to keep up the instability.
