- Beat #1 Florida State 31-0
- Beat Big Ten champ Michigan in Ann Arbor
- Beat #11 LSU in Baton Rouge
- Beat #8 Arkansas
- Beat Big 8 champ Nebraska in the Orange Bowl

And that's not even getting into the questionable officiating in South Bend that season.

Yeah, they were a top team.

Basically, every Miami team from 1986 - 1991 was national title winning level. They either won it or came within a smidge, like the 1986 (even better than 1988, IMO) or 1988 teams. Even 1990 team lost two games, ambushed on the road in game one by Ty Detmer and then a tough loss to a very talented Notre Dame team in another.

They beat #3 Texas by 40 points in the Cotton Bowl, I think they would have beaten the piss out of co-champ Georgia Tech had they played.

Basically, all those Miami teams were really really good, like the USC teams Carroll fielded from 2002 - 2008.
