I agree with you.

My point is this. When they say the OCS wasn't a viable option because they would have needed $400 million for land acquisition, they are conveniently ignoring the fact that they have failed to plan for or acquire land for an OCS at ANY point in the past.

They act like they put some big effort into it and found out it would cost too much. That's bull. They never wanted it. Never planned for it. And didn't make a legitimate effort to do it this time either.

Those new to this all believe the fairy tale they are spinning. To me it is a bald-faced lie. I have lost all respect for the new cast of characters just like I had for the previous cast.

Not at all. I think they had finally gotten the university to a point with the R1 designation where they had some leverage to ask the state for funds. Prior to now, they really didn't have a leg to stand on with that.

I don't disagree that Raines & RC didn't want it & didn't want to plan for it, because Raines didn't get the importance of athletics in college landscape.

However, it's not "failing to plan." You don't throw a stadium on a master plan just because it would be nice to have & a small group of fans/alums want it. Pieces have to line up in order to do it, and I think it's obvious that they made moves toward that in the past decade.

Rudd had his own objective with the R1 designation and wanted to build up athletics in order to get it to a point where a P5 would even look at us seriously, which could then justify the expense - both of those were accomplished under his watch.

Which gets us to now...the pandemic put the UofM in a very rough spot financially, so there's no way you can justify spending the $$ it would require in today's real estate market to acquire the land that the university doesn't already own. They desperately need more student housing over a new stadium, so choices had to be made in regards to land use that they already own.
