I don’t disagree that his system wasn’t succeeding the last few seasons, but I blame him for that. He never seemed to be a distinguished X and O’s coach. He let his superior athletes run the floor and wear teams out. He needs an excellent PG to do that and hasn’t had one the past few seasons, coincidence? And no Cole Anthony and Caleb Love are not PG’s like Marshall or Lawson.

Williams and Smith had different philosophies so maybe Davis does too.

To answer your question, it would not have happened.

UNC hired Bill Guthridge when Dean Smith retired. The similarities of Guthridge-to-Davis and Smith-to-Williams are apparent. Hubert Davis checks every box for a UNC head coach...he’ll get his three years to prove his worth.

In that case, Smith timed his retirement so that UNC had no choice but to go with Guthridge. Smith's intent was to give his loyal assistant three years worth of HC pay to boost his pension as a reward for his service. Unfortunately, Guthridge basically phoned it in after a year or so, leaving the cupboard bare for his successor, Doherty.

Guthridge relied on Phil Ford to recruit during a period when Ford was having personal difficulties.
Recruiting, more than coaching ability will determine Hubert's success.
