Scoop just in from Chapel Hill, re: Roy's replacement - XLance - 04-03-2021 06:34 PM

Hubert Davis interviewed yesterday.
Wes Miller interviewed today.
Jay Wright, Mark Few, and Brad Stevens are still in play.

Roy surprised everyone. Discussions in the athletic department were centered around a retirement after the 2025 season

Jay Wright, Mark Few, and Brad Stevens are not in play. Few is not leaving the Northwest. He has lived there all of his life and he has said he is happy where he is at. Brad Stevens has indicated that he is very happy in Boston. Wright already said he was not interested in the job. Hubert and Miller are your likely choices, and they would be good choices.

Wes Miller is 38, Hubert Davis 50. Miller is the long play here.

Roy Williams was 37 when he was hired at Kansas (he had never been a college head coach).

Different times then...Boeheim was hired at like 29 for HC

UNC IMHO will grab a more experienced coach

But what experience is more valuable? 10 years of Division 1 head coaching experience or 9 years of UNC assistant experience? I can see it either way. If Davis has done a lot of tasks in the Carolina program, it would be a seamless transition to Hubert. But not having head coaching experience is an issue and Miller has that and it isn't like Miller doesn't know the Carolina way.

I'm going to guess it goes with Hubert, and rightfully so.

Brad Stevens could very much be in play if he gets fired in the offseason. I don't even think Danny Ainge's job is safe now, especially with Masai Uriji looking like he's ready to leave Toronto in the offseason.

Stevens and Ainge are both secure. The owner loves Stevens and he loves being with the Celtics. They have made the Eastern Conference Finals three of the last four years. Being 25-25 does not suddenly make Stevens a bad coach and Ainge a bad GM. It just means they are struggling this season. Injuries and Covid-19 have not helped. They have three All-stars on the roster, two that made this year’s All-Star game. It is a process and they just need to keep working at it.

Didn't they also interview Jerry Stackhouse?

Stephens will take another NBA gig before going back to college. The college game has changed a lot since he left, especially the number of players entering the transfer portal and them about to become eligible immediately. Less coaching and more recruiting/pandering than ever before. I don't believe he wants that in his life anymore, even if the job is North Carolina.

UNC to hire Hubert Davis as its next coach

RE: Scoop just in from Chapel Hill, re: Roy's replacement - bill dazzle - 04-05-2021 02:42 PM

I've warmed up to the idea of Hubert Davis leading the Tar Heel program. His credentials (notwithstanding no head coaching experience) are outstanding.

A new era has begun in Chapel Hill, one of my very favorite college towns.

Did UNC interview anybody outside of alums?

RE: Scoop just in from Chapel Hill, re: Roy's replacement - WhoseHouse? - 04-05-2021 03:09 PM

UNC keeping it in the family, not a surprise. I give him 4 years.

RE: Scoop just in from Chapel Hill, re: Roy's replacement - XLance - 04-05-2021 03:11 PM

I think it will only be three.

CRAP!

Raleigh paper said Steve Robinson and Jerod Haase were the only non-former Tar Heels to be interviewed.
