Would you prefer all of the current freshman just redshirt each year? It would result in essentially the same amount of playing time, but it seems that (at least prior to JJ, and mainly referring to BT's redshirting at someone each year) that pill is swallowed much easier.

I mean, if they aren't going to play at all, I would. If they are only going to play garbage minutes, I would also be in favor of redshirting if you can get buy in. But Brady is good enough to play a few minutes of non garbage time here and there and get better. Shanu, probably is not, and probably should have redshirted.

This year it doesnt matter, but in general... YES, Id rather redshirt them than have them waste a whole year of eligibility on 5-10 minutes PT in an entire season.

What if the player decides they want to save their redshirt year regardless if they play or not?

Tell them that you believe that Redshirting is in their best interest. Explain why. Explain that while they do not want to redshirt, you are not going to take that opportunity from them just to ensure that they can play 40 seconds in a few games when the score is out of reach, so they will not be playing under those circumstances. Explain that if they bust their ass and reach a point in their development where it becomes clear that they can help the team by playing this year, not in garbage time, but real action, that you will meet with them and discuss that at that time, and if that point they want to play this year, you move forward with inserting them into the rotation, if they decide that since 3/4 of the year has passed they would prefer to sit the rest out and take the redshirt you will allow them to redshirt. Reinforce that you think they are too talented and too important to the future of the program for you to burn that year by letting them stand there and run out the clock a few times. Then after the season is over you meet with them and discuss the option to redshirt, but I am not sure why they would refuse at that point, season is over, you didn't burn your redshirt and you have the option to gain a year of eligibility.
