DePaul is somewhat like a private school version of the University of Memphis. Both schools are home to lots of students from modest socio-economic backgrounds and located in cities with large African-American populations. However, DU is actually fairly academically prestigious (though not on the level of Georgetown or Villanova). The UofM is not.

Gotcha. I'm not Catholic, and I don't normally associate big private school with inner city, but once I realized that the school is named after St. Vincent De Paul, I made the connection. That makes a lot of sense. The school is not exclusive, and therefore has wide appeal.

You're both right: today's recruits don't know who Mark Aguirre and Terry Cummings are, and that the Blue Demons were once great. DePaul basketball has been a punchline for a long time. And, now that they're in the Big East, it's a lot tougher. But, the ceiling is really high. If they can ever get it going, DePaul can be Chicago's team once again. Of course, that's been said for over 30 years now.

When you mentioned MA and TC, it jogged my memory of Dave Corzine, the Blue Demon big man on the 1970s. I always enjoyed watching him play (at DU and in the NBA).
