They got themselves painted into a corner. They pretty much had to punt on this one at this time.

Their options were
1. to go ahead and vote to axe baseball, putting them out of compliance with being a D1 program
2. Vote not to eliminate baseball creating potential issues regarding finances.
3. Direct the AD and senior administrators to present them with a proposal to deal with whatever the issue is ($$$$ ?) and that allows them to remain D1 or an option that includes dropping down to D2 or D3.
4. Something else that wasn't likely to be well accepted.

By tabling it, I believe they essentially are calling for option 3.
