I could see the season getting cut short if cases either spike in the fall/winter or there ends up being player-to-player transmission.

While the mortality rate looks to be lower than initially thought, the long asymptomatic period and rate of hospitalization for those who are infected, make this a virus that still needs to be taken seriously (for example, when was the last time the seasonal flu overwhelmed a country’s hospital system [Italy] or took over whole floors/hospitals here?).

Not convinced that all, or even most, universities will have on-campus classes start at their normal times in the fall.

It’s only came close to overwhelming hospitals in areas with extremely dense population (Wuhan, NYC) or very old populations where they didn’t know it was spreading for weeks (Italy). Talk to ICU doctors in places like Houston where the hospitals are more empty than they would normally be. A lot of the space was due to cancelling elected procedures but the system was never close to being overwhelmed. So yes it’s worse than the flu in terms of required hospitalizations but not that much worse. It definitely doesn’t impact college age students in any meaningful way. Plus while distancing helps a complete lockdown similar to what we’re going through now hasn’t proven to be significantly more effective than Sweden. I guess people forget H1N1 in 2009? It killed more people globally than COVID-19 so far but instead of killing people with existing conditions it was more likely to kill children. Universities and schools were open in 09...

On the other hand we have unemployment at Great Depression levels now thanks to our reaction to COVID-19. The president thinks that will snap right back to normal but I highly doubt it. This is a unique situation though so who knows. Contrary to proponents of MMT I also don’t think Powell can just print money forever...
